Huge news for the Avatar Legends RPG, as a new starter set available exclusively at Target has been announced. Check it out!

Tabletop RPGs push through to the mainstream in a bigger way than ever before. Announced earlier this week, Magpie Games revealed that the popular Avatar Legends RPG would have a starter set exclusively available at Target. This marks a massive breakthrough for RPGs crossing over into mainstream retail space. Because the only other RPG you’ll find on the shelves of the big box retailer is Dungeons & Dragons.

And arguably Gloomhaven. But the news came in after fans had started noticing the set tucked away next to the usual selection of D&D starter sets and books.

This means that the game will be positioned to reach a very wide audience indeed. And it’s not hard to see why. Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra were both incredibly popular series aimed right at the perfect demographic for Target shoppers. Whether it’s parents who were fans of the series hoping to pass the love on to their children, or a generation growing up just discovering the series.

With a new Avatar series in development at Netflix, this is the perfect time for an exclusive.

Avatar Legends Starter Set – $25

As you might expect, the starter set comes with everything you need to get started playing. There are streamlined versions of the core rules, designed to get you playing as fast as possible. Alongside that is a 40-page introductory adventure, which features two starter adventures: The Pirates of Crimson Sails set in the era of Avatar Aang, and The Burning Fuse, set in the era of Avatar Korra.

Both adventures will teach players how to play and run the game. Alongside this, there’s a set of 10 engraved d6s, 21 combat action cards to try and keep track of things, and 10 pre-generated characters with full illustrations.

Players will also unlock the digital version of the Starter set on Demiplane, and will also receive a 50% discount code for the Avatar Legends Corebook at Demiplane’s Avatar Nexus as well.

The game itself runs on the Powered-by-the-Apocalypse ruleset. Which means it’s focused on storytelling and “narrative moves” meant to emulate the show. It’s a different sort of system than D&D players might be used to. But it’s an easy one to pick up and play, especially for people who have never played an RPG before. Which is potentially many people going through Target.

Will this be another crack in the walls of D&D’s monopoly on RPGs? We’ll have to wait and see. But things are looking good for the Avatar Legends RPG.
