Creator Chris Carter has hinted that an X-Files reboot is on the way – from an unexpected director.

The X-Files debuted in 1993 and is considered one of the most influential television shows ever. Without it, we wouldn’t have shows like Lost, Supernatural, and Fringe. Everyone tuned in to watch Mulder and Scully work unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena, take on monsters of the week, and chase conspiracies about aliens. The phenomenon catapulted stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson into the spotlight. It went on to run eleven seasons, plus two movies.

It’s been five years since the show’s last season wrapped. There hasn’t been much news about the franchise except for the announcement of an animated spin-off series in 2020 (The X-Files: Albuquerque, which didn’t get off the ground). Until now.

X-Files Reboot

During a chat with “On the Coast With Gloria Macarenko” (via Variety) about filming in Vancouver and the impact of the series, X-Files creator Chris Carter dropped this bit of information:

“I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount ‘The X-Files’ with a diverse cast. So he’s got his work cut out for him because we covered so much territory.”

This is the first time the Black Panther director’s name has come up in connection to the iconic series. It’s a bit of a surprise, but a good one. Coogler is signed to a five-year deal with Walt Disney Television; the project would be developed as part of that. This is in the very early stages, so there aren’t many details available. I will assume that, like the other FOX revival projects like King of the Hill and Futurama, it’ll end up on Hulu when/if it gets made.

Based on Carter’s description, it sounds like a total reboot. Given the meandering mythology behind the current timeline is not a bad choice, though it won’t make everyone happy. For a lot of fans, The X-Files isn’t The X-Files without Mulder and Scully.

A lot of possibilities open up with a clean slate and new characters, though. A new set of agents hidden away in a basement office, but with flat screens and smartphones instead of beat-up CRT monitors and Motorola bricks. With a good writing team, there are also plenty of potential cases that won’t repeat what the show has already covered. New can be good.
