‘Blue Beetle’ First Trailer – An Alien Encounter Creates a New DCU Superhero
Jaime Reyes is finally making it to the big screen this summer – check out the first trailer for Blue Beetle.
While this is the first time the fan-favorite character has been on the big screen, Blue Beetle has been in comics for decades. Jaime Reyes is the third person to take up the Blue Beetle mantle since it was introduced in 1939. His powers come from a different place than his predecessors, as does he. The teenager is a reluctant hero that comes into possession of a scarab, alien technology that fuses itself onto his spine. The exo-suit the scarab creates gives Jaime indestructible armor, weapons, flight, and access to an alien AI. And that’s just the start.
Blue Beetle Trailer
In the first trailer, a job interview goes sideways when Jaime is handed a fast food to-go box and told not to open it. He waits to take a peek until he is with his family at home – and they’re all in for a surprise. He lifts the glowing blue scarab out of the box, which promptly attaches itself to Jaime’s face and transforms into technologically advanced armor. We also get a peek at two villains he’ll have to contend with, the infamous Blue Beetle Bug, plus a nod to the other two beetles.
This movie was initially an HBO Max exclusive but got kicked up to the big screen in 2021. Based on this first look, I’m glad it did (also glad it didn’t get canceled entirely). You can’t ignore the Spider-Man vibe in this trailer, but Jaime is not Peter. We’ve seen plenty of stories where the superhero has to hide their powers from those close to them – not here. Jaime’s family is with him all the way.
Blue Beetle Cast & Details
The movie is directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) stars in the title role as well as his alter ego, Jaime Reyes. Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle.
