At D&D Direct, Wizards of the Coast revealed that Vecna is about to play a big role in D&D’s future. Here’s a closer look at things to come.

D&D is plowing headlong into a multiverse. The rules change and the new books, all of them point to an “expansive brand” you can play with. But even if a “cinematic universe” style approach to new shows and books means that it might all get bogged down with one adventure having to set up details for things four seasons down the line, it may not be all interlocking reveals.

D&D Beyond showed off a closer look at the upcoming things in 2023 and beyond. Which makes sense, given that they’re beyond and everything. From a look at what Vecna has to offer, to Planescape and beyond, here’s what they showed.

D&D Beyond Teases Closer Look Vecna, New Books

In the video, you can find a deeper dive into some of the reveals from D&D Direct with the D&D Beyond team and Chris Perkins talk about the future.

And while all this has been touched on before, here are a few highlights from the 14ish minute video.

First of all, art from the upcoming books, including Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants, Planescape, Phandelver, and the Book of Many Things. And speaking of the Book of Many Things there’s a lot happening there. Perkins revealed that it’s a combo book and deck of cards, including new cards being added to the iconic Deck of Many Things which makes it even more customizable and dangerous.

Phandelver’s forthcoming campaign book will include the original Phandelver adventure, Lost Mines of Phandelver, as well as a progression to higher levels. So if you’ve been wondering how that would all shake out, you should check out the book.

Meanwhile, Venger is coming back, as a “redder Red Wizard” to explore the villains in both the D&D Cartoon and the D&D movie, blending the Red Wizards of Thay with the League of Malevolence. And speaking of evil, Vecna’s bold new look will take players across the planes.

The Vecna adventure in 2024 will take players to “a number of cool places and worlds” to be a true continuity-hopping adventure.

All this and more as we head to the 50th anniversary of D&D.
