Almost 10 years ago the first Dead Island 2 trailer lit the bomb and it’s finally going to pay off.

Dead Island 2 was officially shown to the world at E3 2014 with a fantastic trailer playing The Bomb by Pigeon John over a zombie outbreak. That trailer was almost ten years ago and has since gone through multiple studios and changes since it originally started development. Dambuster Studios was the last developer to take over work on the game and since then it finally started making its way to a real release date.

The original Dead Island was developed by Techland and published by Deep Silver back in 2011. It was an open-world action RPG where players have to survive a zombie outbreak as one of four survivors. Dead Island 2 will be taking a different approach to the map and will have six playable characters with plenty of brutal ways to fight zombies. The game finally went Gold back in February and it looks like they are keeping its promised release date now.

Delayed No More

Deep Silver released the final trailer for Dead Island 2 and it is shaping up to be a great time. The trailer shows off some of the beginning where the player is boarding a plane, only for zombies to cause it to crash. The player is bitten by a zombie and found to be immune to the virus that turns people into zombies. Some of the supporting cast gets shown off with some fun dialogue and a montage of brutal combat with the zombies. The montage shows off a little more of the “Fury mode” that lets players kill zombies in their own zombie super mode similar to Ash’s Rage Mode in Evil Dead Regeneration.

The trailer also showed off some more of returning character Sam B, who was one of the original four Dead Island protagonists. He utters one of his famous lines from his song “Who Do You Voodoo.” Exactly what his role in the story has not been fully revealed, but it is good to see a connection to past games.

Re-worked Game System

I wasn’t the biggest fan of the original Dead Island since it made things harder for the player by making all the enemies level scale. This made leveling up pointless since the zombies didn’t become easier to kill as you got stronger. Luckily, the developers at Dambuster Studios have made sure this game will feel a lot better to play as you go along this time around. They also are introducing the skills cards mechanic that lets players boost stats or gain new moves for the best ways to tackle each district of HELL-A.

The coolest thing in the game is Dead Island 2’s unique gore tech, F.L.E.S.H (Fully Locational Evisceration System for Humanoids). It makes it where killing zombies will give a ton of unique ways of looking to make each kill still feel as brutal and disgusting as the last. Players will also be able to upgrade their weapons to have different modifiers to make killing easier or just even flashier.

Dead Island 2 may not be one of my most anticipated games this year after such a long wait for its release, but I can’t deny that it looks like it could be a fun, bloody time.

Dead Island 2 is set to release on April 21st for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC
