Disney just announced a bunch of new Star Wars movies, here’s why I don’t care.

Last week at Star Wars Celebration 2023 Disney announced some new Star Wars movies. It was a move that seemed almost inevitable. We’d heard a lot of rumors about these announcements coming. However, this isn’t the first time that Disney has announced new movies in recent years. After a series of failed launches, I just can’t bring myself to care about them.

So three new movies are coming, but what are they? The movies are a real mixed bag and just from looking at them, it’s hard to see any kind of direction in the franchise’s movies. The first one is a movie following Rey about 15 years after the Sequel trilogy. This would mark the first time since The Rise of Skywalker that Disney has made any real move to advance the storyline.

Next up is an odd movie by director James Mangold that will look at the very first Jedi. This is kind of an odd choice as it takes Star Wars in a very new direction. Still, it opens up a whole new era of Star Wars.

Lastly, we have a movie by Dave Filoni. This movie is set to tie together a ton of the Disney+ shows into one big event. The Mandalorian, Ashoka, Skeleton Crew, and Book of Boba Fett (at the very least) will all have a story climax here. It’s ambitious and is basically the Avengers of Star Wars. Yet despite the hype around these movies, I just can’t care. After all I’ve been burned before.

Disney’s Imaginary Star Wars Movies

Over the past few years, Disney has announced a TON of Star Wars movies. So far all of these movies have basically turned out to be imaginary.

  • Taika Waititi’s movie- We know pretty much nothing about this movie and haven’t had any real updates in forever. Last June it was said this movie was looking at a 2023 release. That seems very unlikely.
  • Shawn Levy’s movie- Another one we know nothing about. He’s talked about this movie but without any details, it’s pretty much imaginary.
  • Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy- This was announced back in 2017 before The Last Jedi came out. And yeah… we really haven’t heard much since then. Johnson has admitted to being busy with other projects, but it hasn’t been officially scrapped.
  • David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ trilogy- Following up on Game of Thrones these two were also given a Star Wars trilogy to make. This one never really got anywhere as the two became busy with Netflix shows (and maybe the horrible reception to the end of GoT had an effect).
  • Star Wars: Rogue Squadron- this one really seemed like it was going to make it. It had a director, Patty Jenkins, a title, and even a short of the teaser. It was slated to come out this year (2023). However, Jenkins left the movie and last year mentions of it were pulled. It seems the project is either dead or frozen in carbonite.
  • Kevin Feige’s Movie- Another one with next to nothing known about it. This has also seemingly been canceled.
  • J.D. Dillard’s Movie- Same song and dance. Nothing is really known and it’s been canceled.

Wow, with some many movies, it does really seem like Disney should stop announcing imaginary Star Wars movies

The Unofficial  Ones

On top of the above list of announced movies, we also had a few that proved to be more imaginary than the rest. Solo 2, an Obi-Wan movie, and a Boba Fett movie were all rumored to be coming down the pipe. None of them were officially announced, but there was a ton of speculation. Boba Fett and Obi-Wan both eventually transformed into Disney+ shows. Solo 2 on the other hand has never been mentioned in any form, despite the first movie clearly setting it up.

Please Stop Announcing Imaginary Movies

So yeah, we’ve got three more movies announced. And I can’t bring myself to care. Disney has over the past few years announced 11 new Star Wars movies. That’s not counting the newest three, which bring us to a total of 14. 14! So far none of these have been made. None of them have even, it seems, come close to getting made. The majority of them sit in some vast limbo. Maybe they are dead, or maybe they are waiting, like Palpatine in the Unknown Regions, and they shall somehow return. Who knows?

Now movies get announced and canceled all the time in Hollywood. Plenty gets put on the back burner for years or decades. On its own, that’s not really strange. However, I struggle to find any kind of example of a major franchise announcing this many movies and not delivering on them. Even DC isn’t this bad. And it’s not like money is even really an issue here. Star Wars has money to throw at projects. So I just don’t really know what is going on. However with so many duds. With an ever-growing collection of basically imaginary movies, I just can’t care when new ones are announced. Either follow through on some projects or Disney should stop announcing imaginary Star Wars movies.
