Epic Games’ ‘Star Trek: Resurgence’ Beams Up a Release Date
Get ready to go where no person has gone before….again.
Star Trek is one of the staples of geekdom and has been around since the 60s. The voyages of the starship Enterprise crew have inspired many. These tales have survived longer than most pop culture introduced at that time. Over the years, it has had many sequel series, movies, novels, comics, and yes, video games. The series has one of the largest catalogs of games out there that even predates even the original Atari company’s founding in 1972, so many of the games are PC games. Consoles offering of Star Trek games is smaller set and varies in quality immensely. Dramatic Labs is wanting to change all that to create the best Star Trek game they can for consoles as well as PC.
Star Trek: Resurgence was announced at the 2021 Game Awards and is being developed by many of the developers let go from TellTale Games’ bankruptcy. They all had formed a new studio named Dramatic Labs and would be bringing the knowledge of making games like The Walking Dead and Batman to the Star Trek brand. The game will have players in an original story that takes place right after Star Trek: The Next Generation on the U.S.S Resolute. The game would be made in Unreal Engine and work like TellTale Games in the past where players’ choices will affect where the story goes. The game was originally slated to come out in Spring 2022 and missed that date. Luckily, we finally got the release date confirmed for its maiden voyage.
A May Baby
Dramatic Labs went to Twitter to announce on the Star Trek: Resurgence Twitter page that the game will be released on May 23rd.

They also made a blog post on the official site for the game to explain why the game was delayed and how they were pretty silent on giving more info on the game till now.
“…we are a relatively small development team, making a pretty big game, and that has been keeping us very busy!
As you might know, we had initially hoped to have the game out in “Spring 2022,” but it is now “Spring 2023.” What happened? Honestly, our initial target was just too aggressive. We were very excited to get Star Trek: Resurgence to everyone as fast as we could, but this is our first game as Dramatic Labs, and our first game built with the Unreal Engine. And along the way it became clear the game wouldn’t be what we wanted if we kept that release window.
We considered trying to hit the holiday season for 2022, but we decided that, if we were going to change the date, we should do it to make the best game we could. Not to meet some arbitrary marketing timeline. That’s why we reset for a Spring 2023 release and now we’re excited to finally announce a date: May 23, 2023!”
“…you might want to know why we’ve been so quiet along the way. We’ve primarily been putting our efforts into getting across the finish line. Trailers, dev diaries, and social media take time away from actually working on the game. We also didn’t want to announce a new release without having a good idea of when we would deliver the game to you. We did preview the game for press at various points along the way and got some great media coverage and we had a blast playing through a scene with the audience at our Comic Con panel in San Diego.
AdvertisementThat said, we realize we could have done a better job of keeping you all in the loop. But now that Star Trek: Resurgence is this close to being in your hands, you’ll be hearing much more from us.”
This all makes sense since the team is so small and the developer is so new, its own developer site is almost blank. Delays can happen to even the biggest studios and hopefully, they used this time wisely.
What We Know About Star Trek: Resurgence
The story mainly follows two members of the U.S.S. Resolute. First Officer Jara Rydek and the engineer crew’s Carter Diaz are the main people players will be spending their time controlling. The game is mostly focused on dialogue and decision-making that will affect how others react to the player. TellTale Games in the past would make this trickier for the player by giving a time limit on your decisions and that has carried over into this new game. Gameplay has been released to IGN to show off how the game looks and plays. The only thing is a lot of the footage is from earlier builds, so the framerate is poor on some of it.
The characters still will get to walk around and look at various objects, characters, and more to get a better idea of what they are working with on the ship and make what they consider the best decisions they can with that info. The team has made sure to make it the most explorable environment they can make it. This is a way to try and show how different they can be from what a TellTale Game would have done in the past. The game will also be a full package instead of released episodically, breaking from what their past employer did.
These games rely on the writing the most when it comes to how long one is willing to play since they are dialogue heavy. There will be action-type events later down the line to keep players on their toes and as long all of it works together, this game could be great.
Familiar Faces in Star Trek: Resurgence
Since the game takes place directly after Star Trek: The Next Generation, the team decided to bring in characters who definitely would be around during this time and there would be very few that are more famous than Spock. Voiced by Piotr Michael, Spock arrives to assist with a diplomatic mission the crew is having trouble with involving the Hotari and Alydians. Players will work with Spock to best deal with the conflict between the two races and your choices will definitely come into play here.
The team let IGN know that the story may play out differently than a friend who is playing it purely based on dialogue choices made. The plot point will appear for everyone, so it can’t be missed. It will just play out differently and you can bet people will be comparing what happened once it is out.
This game is a highly anticipated title thanks to the talent behind making it and the fact it is a Star Trek game that will be more like an episode of a show than an action-packed shooter or a Starship sim. The game will be getting more previews from Dramatic Labs now that the game is much closer to being finished and I can’t wait to see more of what it holds.
Star Trek: Resurgence comes out on May 23rd for PS4,PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC
