‘Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed’ Gets Extreme With Newest DLC
The extreme 90s are coming to Spirits Unleashed.
Illfonic’s Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is a Ghostbusters game that was developed by Illfonic and came out in October. The game is an asynchronous multiplayer where four people play a Ghostbuster and a fifth person plays a Ghost. Players can also play the game with bots taking over any of the roles, so they don’t need 5 people to play. This helps players experience the story mode that came out with it that takes place directly after Ghostbusters Afterlife. It stars Dan Aykroyd returning as Ray Stantz, Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddemore, Rahul Kohli as John H. Tobin, Shara Kirby as Catt, Mike Haimoto as Eddy, and Greg Miller as a ghost with an unknown name.
The game had gotten a very big update in February that gave players brand-new customization options for the equipment, characters, stage, and ghost. The new options let players recreate their favorite Real Ghostbusters characters with the create-a-character customizer and the Equipment Shells. The game is set to get another update and it looks like they are aiming to get a little Extreme.
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Gets Extreme
The developers recently did a Twitch Stream talking about the new DLC options and released a trailer to the Ghostbusters News YouTube channel to show off all the new features in the update. The update is out today and players can get to work on unlocking everything mentioned now.
The most exciting thing is they released a ton of cosmetics that let players recreate the main cast of the 90s cartoon, The Extreme Ghostbusters. What makes that even more exciting than The Real Ghostbusters gear is that everything in their equipment and some of the Busters’ outfits is more unique than what was in the movies. Kylie and Eduardo didn’t wear traditional flight suits, so their outfits alone make this update worth checking out.
All the unique equipment from Extreme Ghostbusters can be unlocked as a shell for the Proton Pack, the PKE Meter, Neturona Wand, and even the circular trap is usable. Just like the last shells, all of it will be unlocked through different challenges the player needs to do for each one. They can be done with bots as well, so feel free to just stick in some headphones to listen to something while you just do them as fast as you can.
The game will also be getting new outfits called the “Sewer Explorer” and “Ecto Hazard suit.” The Sewer Explorer is the one from Ghostbusters II that they wear when they go to the River of Slime and the hat will be unlockable too. There will also be various random new clothes and accessories like a leather jacket and cowboy hat.
New Gear Menu
Something part of the update is something that was teased by Illfonic on the last update. The Gear Customization has gotten a major overhaul. The original menu was incredibly vague on what the equipment changes actually did. Some of the understanding came from the flavor text of what you chose instead of being explained more clearly to the player. The new update will give the stats and abilities in a simpler way to make customizing your playstyle much, much easier than before.
Besides the new shells from the Extreme Ghostbusters, the equipment will now also have customizable color tints. So you can now have a Gold Proton Pack with a blue Neutrona Wand, Red PKE Meter, and a Green trap if you want. This will make your Ghostbuster even that much more unique than ever before.
New Ghosts
The last update gave us Muncher from Ghostbusters Afterlife and this update isn’t about skipping out on new Ectoplasmic content. Ghosts will now have a new Minion power called Minion Traps. They are little ghosts that when encountered will spring up like a trap on a person walking by. It can be pretty horrifying to view from the outside and makes for a bigger challenge for the capture side of the game.
The newest Ghost-type though is the Possessor Ghost. Some ghosts already have the ability to possess civilians, but these ghosts can possess Ghostbusters! The new type consists of Scuttle, Hellion, and the Terror Sentinel from Ghostbusters: Afterlife which is the Terror Dog when not, well a dog. The ability to possess anyone will make for some very unique matches since taking a player will make it that much harder to be caught.
The ghosts will also be getting a new AI type called “Drudges” that can help the Ghost side that’s summoned when a Ghost accesses a rift. The more things they add, the more insane matches can be, so it is welcomed with how many people have mastered the game.
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed New Stage
Last, but not least, a new stage is part of the update called the S.C.Y County Courthouse. The level has been described as filled with “decades of dark practices and paranormal contact.” The level will be filled with halls, offices, and courtrooms all connected to make a “uniquely entwined gameplay space” level.
There will be all kinds of things for ghosts to possess like the statue of Lady Justice, those courtroom TVs with a VCR, and so much more. The level being a big ol’ courtroom is very reminiscent of Ghostbusters II and would make a great place to play the Basher who sorta resembles the Scoleri Brothers the best of all the current ghosts.
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed continues to impress me with how much they continue to balance the game and add customization options that can make any Ghostbusters fan make a noise only heard by animals.
Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed is currently out for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed Free DLC 2 is out as of April 20
