‘Horizon Forbidden West’ DLC ‘Burning Shores’ Final Trailer: New Characters, Weapons, and Enemies Revealed
Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores gets one last trailer before its release.
The PlayStation is known for some of the greatest 1st party-exclusive titles in gaming. So much so that Microsoft admits its Xbox exclusives aren’t as good as Sony’s output. The Horizon series is no exception. Horizon Zero Dawn was developed by Guerilla Games and released in 2017 to very favorable reviews and love from PlayStation fans.
The series takes place in a post-apocalyptic world filled with robotic animals ranging from deer to dangerous giant dinosaur-like monsters. Humans now live in tribes throughout the world and fight with bows and other low-tech weaponry since all knowledge from before was lost. Players take control of a tribe outcast named Aloy, who finds a piece of tech that helps her to deal with the world better than most people. The robotic animals are starting to go wild and only she can stop it. The game eventually got a DLC called The Frozen Wilds, where Aloy has to stop a rogue AI from creating machines designed to kill.
The game did well and got a sequel in 2022 called Horizon Forbidden West. Aloy finds herself navigating into areas not charted by the tribes in her area known as the Forbidden West and discovers other tribes who have tamed machines to ride as she can. I won’t say too much more to keep from spoiling anything that happens. It also came out to a lot of acclaim from both critics and fans of the first one. It was somewhat overshadowed though by coming out around the same time as Elden Ring. It was a lot like when the first one came out at the same time as Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Ironically enough, the latest news did something similar.
Exploring Everything That California Has to Offer
Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores is a DLC announced back in December by Guerilla Games. The DLC finds Aloy going after a threat in the wilds of Los Angeles, California, which has become volcanic and will be introducing new characters, weapons, and enemies. The DLC got its final trailer before its April 19th release and it looks fantastic. The trailer shows off some of the new characters, a returning character, and a glimpse of a new “Zenith” weapon. The trailer sort of got overshadowed by coming out around the same time as the latest The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom trailer. This is really funny to me since the Horizon games keep running into stuff like that with Breath of the Wild and Elden Ring.
So the interesting thing is what this is being released on. The DLC is unique in that it will be the first DLC in a game released on both PS4 and PS5 that will only be released on PS5.
“Our creative vision for the Burning Shores is an ambitious expansion that will take Aloy to the ruins of Los Angeles. It’s an overgrown and fractured city that can be fully explored via the water and flying on the back of a Sunwing. A massive machine threat lurks in its shadows – a huge challenge that Aloy must overcome by using all of her skills and abilities. To achieve this grand vision technically and creatively, we’ve made the difficult decision to focus all our efforts on making an incredible experience exclusively for the PlayStation®5 console.”

So if you have the PS4 version, you won’t be able to play this until it either comes to PC or you buy a PS5.
DLC Preorder Bonuses and How to Access DLC
The DLC isn’t out till April 19th, so you have plenty of time to get any pre-order bonuses for the game announced. If pre-ordered, players get the Blacktide Dye Outfit and Blacktide Sharpshot Bow. The outfit will be available at the first dye merchant and the bow will be at the first merchant in the Burning Shores. The preorder bonuses do not give any specific stats far as we know based on the original announcement, but they do look great.
Once the DLC is released, it can only be accessed once the main story is finished by the player. So if you have not finished the game yet, you have till April 19th to finish it if you want to play the DLC right away.
“The story picks up Aloy’s story right where Horizon Forbidden West left off – so, to enter the Burning Shores, you must complete the main quest (up to and including the final quest Singularity) in Horizon Forbidden West. Following the events of Singularity, she will receive a call over her Focus, beginning the DLC.”
The DLC looks great and more Horizon is never a bad thing. Since it is only a PS5 exclusive DLC, I am interested to see exactly what happens in the game that keeps it from being on the PS4 as well. Hopefully, this signals that more games in the future will be PS5 exclusive to take advantage of the current gen’s tech like Final Fantasy XVI.
