‘Project Black Flag’ Title Reveal and Kickstarter Date – Open 5E Coming in May
Kobold Press announced the official title of their 5E-alike, Project Black Flag, alongside the Kickstarter date—sooner than you’d think!
Project Black Flag got both an official title and a Kickstarter date this past weekend. Black Flag, if you were unfamiliar, is Kobold Press’ take on “Core Fantasy Gaming” aka their version of the 5th Edition D&D rules, but done independently of WotC and any licensing shenanigans. It was originally announced during the OGL debacle of January 2023.
Since then we’ve seen a few playtest packets. Rules in need of tweaks, some good ideas that could improve 5th Edition, and a whole lot of players hoping for either more or better from their 5th Edition. Now, Kobold Press has announced their official title, Tales of the Valiant as well as a Kickstarter date: May 2023.
Project Black Flag Title – Tales of the Valiant Kickstarting This May
Here’s a quick look at the official announcement:
Tales of the Valiant (ToV) is a Core Fantasy Roleplaying game that builds on the Creative Commons foundation of 5th Edition.
Project Black Flag has taken bold steps to keep 5th Edition vibrant in an evolving industry. Since January, Kobold Press and the growing 5E community have worked together to create an open, independent version of 5th Edition. Today we reveal the name of the bold future for Kobold Press.
We are writing ToV now. When it’s done, it will be based on the new Core Fantasy Roleplaying rules. (If you’re just joining us, Kobold Press is committed to releasing Core Fantasy Roleplaying to everyone under an open, perpetual, and irrevocable license. It’s like the SRD, but more thorough.)
What’s interesting here is that they say they’re building on the Creative Commons foundation of 5th Edition, while at the same time releasing Core Fantasy Roleplaying through the “open, perpetual, irrevocable license” they mention, presumably the ORC.
They do promise to release more than the 5th Edition SRD, with the whole ruleset made available in two books, the Player’s Guide and Monster Vault. As you might guess from the name, the Player’s Guide has all the rules, and 13 base classes, lineages, and heritages for your character building. While the Monster Vault is a manual of monsters.
All of this will be coming to Kickstarter May 2023.
Tales of the Valiant joins Level Up A5E and Cubicle 7’s C7d20 system in offering up different ways to play with 5th Edition. Which one’s your favorite?
