Supergirl, Booster Gold, & More – Read the Comic Inspirations of DC Studio’s Upcoming Slate
There are new characters and stories from across the comics universe in Gunn’s DC Studio slate. Here’s where you should start reading.
The new slate of DCU movies and shows was announced yesterday. James Gunn pointed to several comic inspirations for what he and Peter Safran have planned. If you want to get a feel for what the new DCU might be like, check out these books.
All-Star Superman – Grant Morrison
Gunn used the cover art for this Eisner Award-winning series by Grant Morrison during his announcement, and the plot he described doesn’t sound far off. The series features a Buddha-like Superman that faces familiar foes and works to save mankind while dealing with his own morality. It’s a thoughtful and moving story that’s made even better by gorgeous art from Frank Quitely. The whole run is contained in one trade paperback.
Batman & Robin – Grant Morrison
The DCU’s The Brave and The Bold will adapt another story from Morrison, whose run in the mid-aughts took Batman all over the place (including dead). One of their most significant contributions in that run was the addition of Bruce’s adolescent son Damian Wayne to the Bat Family. The violent and petulant boy was raised by Talia al Ghul and the League of Assassins before Bruce gained custody.
Damian first showed up in Batman #655. You can read about the adventures that followed in Batman & Robin.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow – Tom King
The last tie we saw Supergirl on screen was a travesty, so I’m excited that she’s getting another shot with a great story. Kara Zor-El is about to call it quits when an alien girl seeks her out for a mission – her planet has been obliterated, and she wants Supergirl’s help to gain revenge. Bilquis Evely’s art for this book is phenomenal.
Booster Gold Vol. 2: Blue and Gold – Geoff Johns
Get to know two DCU characters in one great origin story. The time-traveling hero Booster Gold tries to change history to save his best friend, the Blue Beetle. On his mission, he learns that messing with time has unpredictable, deadly consequences – including killing the JLA. Can Booster Gold make things right?
The Creature Commandos – J.M. DeMatteis
A modified version of this monster team will be the first animated DCU series. The original bunch fought Nazis in WWII and included a werewolf, a vampire, a gorgon, and Frankenstein’s monster. This volume collects the 1980s-era Weird War Tales that cover their origin story.
