Root is one of the most enjoyable strategy games out there, and it’s 20% off today!

Root is one of my favorite board games. I love a game with a good amount of asymmetry, and Root is 100% that game. It’s also great on mobile if that’s more your speed.

Root Overview

What makes Root so great (no, I will not stop praising this game) is how each of the different factions plays entirely differently. This is no mere unique faction powers or adjusted stats. In Root, each faction is playing nearly an entirely different game from one another.

For example, the bird folk of the Eyrie Dynasty aims to control as much of the woodlands as possible. They use Decrees that they pick to determine which actions they can take on their turn. They can choose to double up on various actions while completely ignoring others. However, they must take those actions. If they don’t, there is an uprising, and a new leader is established. Then they start the process all over.

Meanwhile, the Vagabond is a single unit that roams the woods stealing, treasure hunting, going on quests, and trading with the other factions hoping to find the perfect moment for a sneak attack. They use tools and equipment to perform their actions but are limited by the size of their backpack and how much coffee they drink in a given day.

The only similarity between these factions is the idea that they take action on their turn. Everything else is mechanically so different. Root is a game you can play over and over and literally play a different game each time.

BoLS might make a few bucks on anything you buy from these links. But, be honest, you don’t enjoy randomly browsing online stores. So let us do the annoying part for you. Help us help you.
