Warhammer 40K Meta Hotness: Hernkyn Pioneers
This week’s 40K Meta Hotness is the unit that first teased the Leagues of Votann – the Hernkyn Pioneers. They are a major part of any Space Dwarf Army out there. Here’s why.
They combine so many rules into one body there is a reason why they always show up in armies. Plus – it is a model that is fairly easy to get. While Hernkyn Pioneers are kind of difficult to build they showcase why the Votann are a rough army to face with so many rules it just makes you wonder how they left the factory.
Plethora of Bullets!
These guys shoot a lot. Hernkyn Pioneers firepower isn’t ground breaking it is just – a lot to stomach. The basic guy throws out a ton of bullets from all ranges and you can upgrade a few of them to shoot even more. It’s s a ton of strength 7 shots at 2 damage that can easily wear you down thru their firepower. Plus, at its closest for its big gun it is 18”. So they can be a pain to get close enough to assault and remove.
Hernkyn Pioneers Are Fast
Oh and these guys have a pregame scout move of 12”. So even if you are well hidden they can move up, move again, and pepper you with bullets. They have a large body as well which lets them cover a good deal of real estate just due to their nature of being quick. Oh and Hernkyn Pioneers also ignore any or all modifiers to their move characteristics on Advance and Charge rolls too.
Tough as Well
As a bike platform they are tough too. They have 3 wounds on top of being toughness 5. Also as Hernkyn Pioneers are a Votann option they have Void Armour too. This gives them the ability to not have wound rerolls used against them as well as getting Armour of Contempt on top of it. Remember how I said it feels like they just have all the rules?
Taking Your Objectives
These models also get Objective Secured on top of it all too. So Hernkyn Pioneers are fast, tough to deal with, and can hold objectives easy just makes these guys a simple no brainer for the Votann army. If I could have a biker unit that did any of these things I would be so happy as a World Eaters/Chaos player.

Who would have thought Space Dwarf bikers would be this good. Hernkyn Pioneers are some of the foundational pieces for the Votann army and will show up most of the time. They dance around the edges, throw decent firepower out, and are a pain in the butt to deal with.
