‘Babylon 5: The Road Home’ Voice Cast Reunites Original Series Members
The animated movie has a title – Babylon 5: The Road Home – and a voice cast that includes Peter Jurasik and others from the original series.
Babylon 5 has a familiar underlying idea to it – a plethora of alien races and humans trying to co-exist on a space station. Compared to what was out at the time, its plots are darker, and they focused on complex conflicts and political intrigue that wove into a larger story. Its multifaceted characters evolve as the story moves forward. The format and storytelling were groundbreaking. It changed television with its use of tech and a pre-planned story arc that tossed out the endless story-of-the-week approach that was standard at the time.
The show ran for five seasons starting in 1993 and spawned several direct-to-TV movies to supplement the main story before it wrapped in 1998. If you’ve never watched it, the entire run is on Tubi for free right now.
The franchise has a loyal fanbase that’s just as invested as Trekkies. And they have been waiting for the same sort of expansion Star Trek has gotten – it’s almost here.
Babylon 5: The Road Home
Last week a surprising bit of news dropped direct from the series creator J. Michael Straczynski – an animated movie is coming out this year. It will continue the story he started in the 1990s.
“Travel across the galaxy with John Sheridan as he unexpectedly finds himself transported through multiple timelines and alternate realities in a quest to find his way back home. Along the way he reunites with some familiar faces, while discovering cosmic new revelations about the history, purpose, and meaning of the Universe.”
Returning Babylon 5 cast members include Bruce Boxleitner as John Sheridan, Claudia Christian as Susan Ivanova, Peter Jurasik as Londo Mollari, Bill Mumy as Lennier, Tracy Scoggins as Elizabeth Lochley, and Patricia Tallman as Lyta Alexander.
The animated format is allowing characters from the original series to be a part of the story even though they’ve passed on. The voice cast also includes Paul Guyet as Zathras and Jeffery Sinclair, Anthony Hansen as Michael Garibaldi, Mara Junot as Reporter and Computer Voice, Phil LaMarr as Dr. Stephen Franklin, Piotr Michael as David Sheridan, Andrew Morgado as G’Kar and Rebecca Riedy as Delenn.
There’s not an exact release date, but Warner Bros. is aiming for a summer release. That likely means streaming one of their services, not theaters.
What About the Live-Action Reboot?
Back in 2021, original series creator J. Michael Straczynski announced that he was working on a live-action reboot series for the CW. The plan was to bring in new actors and add more ideas and influences from the ever-changing real world. He mentioned that he was working on the pilot as part of that announcement.
There hasn’t been any major news about that project since, but it’s not entirely dead. While hyping Babylon 5: The Road Home Straczynski mentioned they’re waiting for a production order to go ahead. With the WGA strike in full effect, there’s no telling when that will happen.
