Goatboy’s 40K 10th Edition Thoughts – Feeding Your Leviathan Box Tyranids
Goatboy here again. Let’s talk a bit about what you should do with your Tyranids after buying the new Leviathan Box set.
As usual with any new boxed set with 2 armies in it you have to decide if you are going to go out and try to trade off one half of it or keep both for future armies. The easiest one to look at and most likely the one everyone will use to jump start a new force is the Marine half of things. Those are pretty simple builds as they have a ton of boxed sets and other fun options to mess around with.
It is also very boring so meh… let’s look at what you can do with the Tyranid boxed set minis.
We’ll start with the hope that you can swap out your Marines for more Nids. I think this is a much easier trade most of the time versus trying to get your Nids swapped to Marines so I am pretty sure you can do it. Also – I think the characters on the Marine side are much less important to have “duplicates” of than the Nid side of things. I could be wrong but the two “characters” with the Winged Tyranid Prime and the Neurotyrant both appear set up to be useful in the list as duplicates.

Growing Your Hive Fleet
This feels like a decent amount of Tyranids to build off of. So the question is where do you go from here? What are the things you need to get? Without points we don’t know the room we got left so let’s dream of things you could use to create the army.
Let’s make it simple with just a few boxed sets and build from there. The most important one I think – and probably the best add on would be the simple Hive Tyrant. From there we could look at a Carnifex Brood Box to help shore up some damage potential other options to help shore things up a bit. This gives you enough fun pieces to work with and again depending on how the indexes roll out – enough bodies to win you some games.
You should look at adding a box of Zoanthropes, but a word of caution. We don’t know if the Neurothrope might be something that can join units or we could utilize that boxed set as a Venomthrope set of options. We could also look at a single box of Gargoyles as just another fast little option to help get us around the tabletop. Finally we could grab a box of Warriors too and this would help round out our purchase to a bit above $500 – not really including any bulk buys or other discounts if you look around. There are a lot of Tyranid army bits for sale if you shop carefully.
Putting It All Together
So with it all condensed here is what you would have to work with.

2 Carnifex Unit option
40 Guants

Time to Get NOM NOM NOMing
Which feels like a pretty big army to start with and again – with some savvy shopping you could get this cheaper or more angry monsters to mess with. Of course without the Indexes to look at it is hard to figure out if this is good or not – but at the very least is using what you get from the new boxed set to jump start a new army of monsters ready to eat the universe. I also expect a new Combat Patrol to come out too – which could help shore some things up in the future as the current Nid one is out of stock and full of models that are getting reworked.
