Karl Urban to Play ‘Mortal Kombat 2’s Johnny Cage – But There Are Better Options
Mortal Kombat 2 has added a wonderful and talented actor to its cast, but is he the right choice for Cage? I’m not so sure.
Johnny Cage has been with the franchise since its start–he was one of the characters in the 1992 game. He’s an action movie star with a martial arts background that fights for the Earthrealm–he’s loosely based on JCVD. Cage puts a lot of importance on his image and is known for making jokes and funny quips to annoy his opponents. He’s also not a slouch in a fight and has earned the respect of other competitors.
The post-credits of the 2021 movie teased his inclusion in the sequel, which starts filming in June.
The returning cast includes Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, and Lewis Tan as playing Cole Young.
The Wrap is reporting that Urban is in final talks to take the role in the sequel. Director Todd Garner shared the news on Twitter, which likely means it’s a done deal. I like Karl Urban – he’s a great actor, he’s been in a lot of things I like. He’s an amazing Billy Butcher. But I don’t like him for this.
I have a suggestion… ok, three.
The Miz
The WWE star is perfect for this. You can’t deny he looks the part. He has the physicality, and he has the chops for Johnny’s brand of comedy. Last year he talked about wanting the role; he even started training for it.
“I wanna play Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat, I have been working on my splits, I’ve been working on my kicks. As soon as I saw that Mortal Kombat was out and there was no Johnny Cage yet and my name was literally trending Worldwide No. 1, ‘We want Miz as Johnny Cage,’ I was like, ‘If that want that to happen, I need to basically make sure that I am prepared and ready that if that opportunity presents itself then I will be ready and focussed.’ So I called my trainer that helped with Marine 6, I was like, ‘How do you do his intro kicks?’ I need them left-handed and right-handed because Johnny can do both.”

Alain Moussi
Moussi is an actor, experienced stunt performer (he’s doubled for Henry Cavill and Hugh Jackman), and martial artist trained in jujitsu, kickboxing, and karate. He has all the training and physical ability, he’s got the look, and he’s also said he wants to play Cage.
That’s him, kicking Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson in the face in Kickboxer: Retaliation.
Casper Van Dien
He played Johnny in the second season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy. Looking like this.
