WotC Announces D&D’s New Book, Reveals Covers For the Rest of 2023
Wizards of the Coast is doing many things right now. Hiking the price of their books. Announcing new ones. Here’s a look at 2023.
Wizards of the Coast, a company known for sending Pinkertons after their fans, and stepping from one PR rake to the next, like some kind of corporate Sideshow Bob, has announced a new book, as well as revealed the covers (and a little more info) about what awaits in the rest of the year.
The Practically Complete Guide to Dragons
First up, the new book: The Practically Complete Guide to Dragons. This is an update of a 2006 book, The Practical Guide to Dragons which was a book aimed at younger readers. Much like Jim Zub’s Young Adventurer’s Guides, this book will be an in-universe lore book all about dragons. With art that explores the anatomy of dragons, society, lairs, and more, the book will be 128 pages. The only thing you won’t find in it? Game rules.
The Practically Complete Guide to Dragons is set to release on August 15th for $39.95
Now, let’s get to the rest of the calendar.
Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants
According to a recent press briefing, Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants will take a look at giants with a particular focus on their “magical, elemental, and mythic nature.” With a goal of doing for giants what Fizban’s did for dragons, the book has a lot of groundwork to lay as the first in the new wave of more expensive D&D books.
The book promises 76 new monsters, as well as new feats and rules for “a giant subclass”. And this book too, won’t release until August 15th.
Planescape: Adventures in the Multiverse
We get our first look at the cover of the new iconic Planescape set. This three-book boxed set follows the same format as the Spelljammer campaign setting did, much to the chagrin of many fans who were unsatisfied with that execution.
The three books will be called: Sigil and the Outlands – a 96-page guide to the setting, and particular Sigil; Morte’s Planar Parade – a 64-page bestiary of all weird, impossible Planescape monsters; and Turn of Fortune’s Wheel, a 96-page adventure that takes players across the Outlands.
And it’s this last that seems to have the players the most up in arms. The community seems hungry for more setting detail and rules for playing, not an adventure to play in. With only 96 pages dedicated to the setting, many community members wonder if the book can actually be called a Planescape book, despite knowing nothing about what’s actually in the boxed set yet, as that doesn’t come out until October 16th.
Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk
Written “for fans of traditional dungeon crawls” this book will bring players back to the familiar town of Phandalin. With a play that will take characters from 1st-12th level, this new campaign will be the first big standalone adventure to cost $59.95 (or $69.95 for the digital + physical bundle) and will release September 19th.
The Book and Deck of Many Things
Alongside the new Book of Many Things, WotC will be releasing a Deck of Many Things. The Deck will have 66 fully illustrated cards that DMs can hand to players. That way you can physically feel just how badly you’re about to ruin your whole campaign. The Deck of Many Things is due out November 14th.
