You’ll Have a Copy of TV Tropes Pulled Up in Every Game of ‘Outgunned RPG’
Whether you’re looking to play as John Wick, James Bond, or any action star in between, Outgunned RPG will have you slowly walking away from every explosion.
Outgunned RPG is an upcoming tabletop role-playing game set in the worlds of Last Action Hero, Lethal Weapon, Ocean’s 11, Hot Fuzz, and more. If there’s over-the-top action, Outgunned has you covered.
Outgunned RPG is currently running a Kickstarter campaign, so be sure to check all the details out over there. It was fully funded in just 5 minutes – so you know they are cooking something good.
Characters in Outgunned RPG are run-and-gun action heroes. Unlike in some of your other roleplaying games, Outgunned uses a system called Director’s Cut. Don’t worry about rolling high or low. In Outgunned, you’re always looking for the Jackpot.
Director’s Cut Game System
Director’s Cut is how Outgunned resolves actions with a chance of failure. The player adds the scores from one of their attributes and one of their skills, whichever makes the most sense for the action.
This could be adding their Brawn attribute with their Stunt skill in order to survive jumping off a roof of a building and onto the roof of a passing taxi. Or maybe, they need to use their Nerves attribute with their Cool skill in order to diffuse the bomb safely. Either way, the player will be rolling between 2 and 9 six-sided dice.
In Director’s Cut, each skill has a difficulty. These are Basic, Critical, Extreme, and Impossible. In order to achieve each difficulty check, the player needs to roll two, three, four, or five of a kind. Rolling two of a kind is a Basic Success, and rolling five of a kind is an Impossible success, and you can fill in the rest.
Heroes in Outgunned RPG will have plenty of options for rerolling, but not without risk. Attempting a re-roll and rolling a worse result means the character loses one of their successes. But, heroes will also gain feats that grant bonus rerolls or even bonus successes in specific situations.
Highly Thematic Gameplay
Of course, things like the character’s gear can also affect their roles, but so can their Adrenaline, and if they employ their catchphrase, or if they are playing to their assigned trope. All of these things have a mechanical effect on the character.
Outgunned RPG is a game that wears its inspiration on the sleeve of its blood and sweat-soaked plain white t-shirt. The game knows what it is setting out to do, and even the Quick Start Guide is written incredibly tongue-in-cheek.
