We’ve got a lot of Ahsoka news this week, including an official release date. Here are all the new details of the highly-anticipated series.

There has been a lot of movement from the Star Wars camp regarding the upcoming Disney+ series, Ahsoka. Anakin Skywalker‘s former padawan has evolved from “one of the worst parts of The Clone Wars” to “perhaps the fandom’s favorite character” after years worth of adventures and character growth. And we’re finally looking forward to seeing her appear in her own stand-alone live-action streaming series. But what’s new with Ahsoka this week and what do we have to look forward to?

New Trailer and Release Date

I’m going to be real with you, not a whole lot about this trailer is new. If you saw the last Ahsoka trailer, you can probably skip this one. And if you were at Celebrations in London, you almost definitely saw more than the rest of us, even with a second trailer drop. Still, there are a few things in here that I’m pretty excited about.

For starters, we finally have an official release date for the Ahsoka. Wednesday, August 23rd is the day. It will be like Life Day in August. Y’know, instead of Christmas in–never mind.

I also can’t help but notice the juxtaposition between Ahsoka’s repeated insistence that she’s not a Jedi throughout the animated shows, and the implication that she is the Jedi in this show. Obviously being a Jedi and quitting the order has a different meaning now in this post-Jedi world.

But I’m interested to see if this series touches on her complex relationship with the order and if ‘Jedi’ is a title she ever uses for herself. It’s also possible that ‘Jedi’ is synonymous with ‘Force user’ for people who have never had any Jedi training.

Aside from that, this trailer seemed to linger on the holo of long-lost Ezra Bridger a little longer, and I’m pretty sure that Sabine Wren is wielding Ezra’s old lightsaber for a moment there. We still don’t get a look look at Lars Mikkelsen as live-action Grand Admiral Thrawn, nor are there any more hints as to who the new characters are.

I expect we’ll get one more trailer before release day. But the second trailer being so similar to the first makes me wonder, why all the secrecy? It feels like perhaps ‘safe scenes’ had to be carefully picked out so as to not reveal too much too early. Just how big will Ahsoka be and how many reveals and surprises are we in for?

Empire Magazine

Empire did a multi-page spread on the Ahsoka. And it looks like if we tune in, the team is already ready to go on Season Two. Personally, I’m cautiously optimistic about this show. I like Ahsoka, I like Thrawn, I generally trust Filoni to make a good product, and my interest is piqued by the multiple Heir to the Empire references we’ve gotten from various shows this year before the book was mentioned by name in the Ahsoka trailer. But I also know better than to put the tauntaun ahead of the cart; we want to see a quality final product come August, first.

Still, fingers crossed.

Also covered was Lars Mikkelsen’s take on his return to Star Wars and Thrawn, this time in live-action.

“I’m not losing the voice, but I am tweaking it into live-action. When you do an animated character, there’s a whole melodious approach. When you’re there as a real person, that would be just slightly too much. I love the way he rises through the Empire, and the way he carries himself in that environment to become somebody. And then of course, how can you not like a very clever villain? Thrawn takes the time to understand his opponent’s culture, and what they’re about. It’s lovely to be playing that.” – Lars Mikkelsen, Empire Magazine
