The Indiana Jones movies are cinematic treasures. Its titular hero is one of cinema’s ultimate action movie characters with a desire for adventure, knowledge of ancient history, and vulnerabilities that make him relatable. Oh, and that great sense of humor. After a 15-year absence from the screen, Indy is coming back for one last adventure next week.
The fifth entry into the Indiana Jones story moves up several decades to 1969. Things have changed. The professor’s enemy is working within the US government with approval in the space program, and Indy is ready to fall asleep in his easy chair. But, that’s not to be. The latest trailer shows the grizzled professor’s retirement celebrations being interrupted by his goddaughter and a mysterious object from his past.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny arrives in theaters next Friday – June 30th.
Along with the iconic hero, John Williams is back and writing the score for the sequel over four decades after he created the franchise’s memorable theme. The 91-year-old (who retired last year, but couldn’t stop making music) even took to the stage to conduct part of the score at last week’s premiere.

The score for the new movie will be available digitally on June 28th, according to director James Mangold, and as a 2 LP set on August 9th. While you’re waiting, here are some classic Williams scores and recordings you should add to your LP library.
Indiana Jones Trilogy
The music of Indiana Jones calls to you–go on an adventure, get lost in a romance! The Star Wars Trilogy
Initially released in 1983, this LP features a selection of the most popular themes from the original trilogy performed by the Utah Symphony Orchestra. The recording is John Williams, and Lucasfilm endorsed. If the limited editions are a bit too much for your budget and you want some Star Wars in your vinyl collection, this is a fantastic option.
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
1982 was a huge year for movies. Steven Speilberg’s story of friendship is a stand-out. Williams’ score had a lot to do with that–its uplifting theme is filled with hope, curiosity, and dreams to go beyond the stars. This new 180-gram black vinyl pressing from Mondo features cover artwork from Dan McCarthy and liner notes by film music historian Mike Duquette.
Live Recordings
These live recordings are a way to listen to the composer’s work in a totally new way. The Berlin Concert includes recordings from Williams’ performances with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2021. The other set features a recording of Williams conducting the Vienna Philharmonic in 2020, an opportunity he called one of the greatest honors of his life.
Both include a selection of music from his seventy-year-long career that goes beyond his most famous pieces. Hook, Far and Away, Close Encounters, and War Horse are represented along with some of the composer’s non-film works.
