Dave Filoni offers insights on Ashoka’s journey back to Sabine and her promise. Plus new images from the set.

It’s been 15 years since her debut on The Clone Wars, it’s time for Ahsoka to lead her own series. She’s seen her master turn to the dark side, aided the rebellion, joined the crew of the Ghost, and traveled in the World Between Worlds. Her experiences caused her to reject the Jedi Order’s doctrine. Writer Dave Feloni, who has been with her at every step, describes where Ahsoka is at the start of this new series.

“She’s a wanderer at this point, and is in a lot of ways wary of any organization as such because of the power that comes with it as a group. She walks a path that basically died out a long time ago. And there aren’t many like her left, if any. So that’s a lonely thing. What is that life like? If you are a loner, you have a very small circle of friends. What is it like, then, when you try to open back up?”

She has to team up with the Ghost’s crew again to make good on a promise made to Sabine Wren at the end of Rebels – to find Ezra Bridger. The young Jedi made a heartbreaking sacrifice that left him lost in the vast galaxy. Natasha Liu Bordizzo (live-action Sabine) said this about the Mandalorian warrior’s motivation…

“She feels an obligation to him. When they freed Lothal, she was given this hero status. But she doesn’t feel that she’s earned that because she lost her friend in that whole debacle. She’s just focused on the promise she made to him to find him.”

The Move to Live-Action

Filoni has always wanted to make the jump. He wrote the end of that series wanting to continue the story in live-action.

“Even at the time I did the Rebels epilogue, I felt like, ‘If I go forward with this, this has to be challenging in another way. And the challenge was going to be live-action. I wanted to resolve these things with [Ahsoka], but I wanted to do something new with it.”

Translating all of these beloved animated characters to live-action is going to be a feat. What we’ve seen so far is reassuring. I’m really curious about how Thrawn will be adapted – we got a tease in the first trailer, but the back of Lars Mikkelsen’s head isn’t a lot to go on.

Ahsoka Cast

Rosario Dawson is reprising her role as Ahsoka – the last we saw her was in The Mandalorian S2. Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger, Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma, and David Tennant as the voice of Huyang. Villians include Diana Lee Inosanto as Morgan Elsbeth, Ray Stevenson (RIP) as Baylan, and Ivanna Sakhno as Shin.

Lars Mikkelsen is bringing his Grand Admiral Thrawn to live action. Hayden Christensen is returning as Darth Vader, but it’s not clear if that will be in flashbacks or as a force ghost.
