RPG Roundup: Celebrate Pride with New Adventures From Queer Creators
It’s time to roll the dice on some new adventures! Come check out this week’s batch of tabletop role-playing games by Queer creators.
Sleepaway
A horror game of Belonging Outside Belonging about a group of summer camp counselors protecting their queer youth from a monstrous cryptid.
Sleepaway gives us long hazy days, chilled summer nights, kids screaming and chasing fireflies, crackling campfires, and a gaunt, cruel monstrosity forever hiding just out of sight, always asking, “What do you do next?”
FaeCraft & CraftWork
These supplements aim to help players and game masters generate fantastical, unique, and memorable characters and NPCs.
- FaeCraft includes shapeshifting and diminutive Fae, awesome Giants, elemental Stone Folk, mycologist Mould Crafters, mysterious Dream Thieves, and more!
- CraftWork includes eight classic character paths, or “crafts,” such as MageCraft, ThiefCraft, Stagecraft, all of which interweave as broadly as you can imagine!
Litchcraft
This is a game about spite, necromancy, being trans, and a 300-year-long NHS waiting list. Although the game itself deals with serious themes, it is set up to be tongue-in-cheek, satirical, super queer, and intimate.
Lichcraft is a rules-light tabletop RPG set up to be played with 2 or more players. The play is inspired by Forged in the Dark systems, with a simple D6-pool resolution mechanic. Give this game a try if you like dystopian settings, collaborative world-building and play, magic-wielding queer characters, interesting and individualistic ways of spellcasting, and undeath as a metaphor for… something.
Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast
Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast is many things. It’s a bed and breakfast, of course, but it’s also this book. And this book is a book, of course, but it’s also a role-playing game-the sort of game we can play with our friends around a table, or on a voice call while hanging out, or even very, very slowly by mail.
Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast is played over the course of 48 chapters, each of which is a 1 to 2-hour scenario with its own unique but quick-to-learn rules. Players can take control of one of the 7 long-term residents of the B&B or choose from a cast of 50 quirky guests, each of whom has their own ongoing storylines.
Monsterhearts 2
Monsterhearts 2 lets you and your friends create stories about sexy monsters, teenage angst, personal horror, and secret love triangles. When you play, you explore the terror and confusion of having a body that is changing without your permission. This game is powered by the Apocalypse World engine. It draws inspiration from Twilight, True Blood, Buffy, Ginger Snaps, The Vampire Diaries, and The Craft.
Cantrip
Cantrip is a Belonging Outside Belonging game about young witches attending a magical academy. This book contains everything you need to run an action-packed adventure for 4-6 characters!
Taking cues from Little Witch Academia, The Owl House, and high school anime, as well as Witch Hat Atelier and Discworld’s Unseen University, players will build the world together during play, make trouble, learn magic, fall in love, make friends and try to make it through a full school year.
Thirsty Sword Lesbians
A sword duel can end in kissing, a witch can gain her power by helping others find love, and an entire campaign can be built around vagabond matchmakers piloting their sentient gay spaceship from system to system. Even when swords are crossed, rivals have the potential to connect more deeply than anyone expects.
An innovative take on the Powered by the Apocalypse family of games. Thirsty Sword Lesbians celebrates the love, power, and existence of queer people. If you love roleplaying games and angsty disaster lesbians with swords, you’ve come to the right place. In this book, you’ll find: Flirting, sword fighting, and zingers in a system designed for both narrative drama and player safety.
Monster Care Squad
This is part of the itch.io queer games bundle – you can snag it or get the whole collection!
Monster Care Squad is a tabletop roleplaying game set in the tranquil world of Ald-Amura. The peaceful state of the world is threatened when a mysterious poison known as The False Gold finds its way into the veins of the world’s Monsters, causing terrible, maddening Wounds, which drive these incredible beings into uncontrollable rages.
The once unbreakable bond of harmony and respect between Humans and Monsters is on the brink of collapse, and it’s up to you and your allies to set things right.
#iHunt: The RPG
Be a hero. You pick the hours.
#iHunt is a storytelling game about killing monsters in the gig economy. In it, you play millennials scraping by paycheck to paycheck to make ends meet. A gig app called #iHunt offers them more money than they’ve ever made to hit the streets and kill vampires, werewolves, demons, and anything else that goes bump in the night.
