Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Paradise’ Trailer: Eternal Youth Can Be Repoed
Netflix’s latest dystopia, Paradise, asks what youth and longevity are truly worth.
Twisted plots about eternal life, societies bent on being forever young, and the power of time isn’t new for sci-fi. Paradise takes the theme of time and aging as a commodity in a bit of a different direction. Youth can be repossessed.
In a not-too-distant future, a biotech start-up AEON develops a method of transferring years of your life from one person to another. It changes the world forever and turns AEON into a billion-dollar pharmaceutical company with significant power.
Max and Elena’s great life together takes a turn when they face unexpected bills they can’t pay. In order to pay off the debt, Elena must pay with 40 years of her life. The loss of life robs the couple of time with each other, ruining their future. Max, who works for AEON, tries to get his love’s years back–but nothing will ever be the same.
The movie is already being compared to Andrew Niccol’s In Time, which is set in a world where humans are engineered to die at 25 (it borrows from Logan’s Run). It definitely has those vibes. It also fits right in with the horrors of Black Mirror. The trick with a story that’s steeped in familiar concepts is to make the details unique. I’m curious to see what those details are in Paradise.
