It’s only about half of the crew, but let’s get to know the Straw Hat Pirates we’ll be meeting in this summer’s live-action One Piece.

Netflix’s live-action take on the hugely popular anime series, One Piece comes out later this summer on August 31st. We’re all a little nervous for this one because… y’know… live-action anime on Netflix. But I think we have a few reasons to be optimistic. And even if it doesn’t pan out, the original has been one of the most popular Shounen series – even inspiring an official One Piece card game –  for years for a reason. So let’s take a minute to get to know a little more about the Straw Hat pirates who we’ll meet in the first season of Netflix’s One Piece.

Monkey D. Luffy

Luffy is the main character of One Piece and if you know nothing else about him, you know that he’s aiming to find the ‘one piece’ treasure in order to become King of the Pirates. What you might not know, is that to him ‘king’ is pretty much just the guy with the most freedom. So Luffy isn’t looking for power or a title in his search for the one piece as much as for the ability to never be told what to do ever.

Powers in the One Piece universe come from eating the special and rare ‘devil fruits,’ and Luffy ate the Gum-Gum fruit which gives him rubber powers. He’s super stretchy and can change his body shape and size in almost any way he can imagine. But it also gives him some defense against electricity.

Roronoa Zoro

When we first meet Zoro he’s a pirate hunter, but after Luffy relentlessly forces friendship and loyalty on him, Zoro eventually decides to join Luffy’s tiny pirate crew. He’s the Straw Hats’ number two, and one of the most accomplished swordsmen in the world. Zoro is known for his serious and gruff demeanor, but in that anime way, we know that he cares a lot deep down. Zoro doesn’t have any powers, but he has borderline super-strength.

Nami

Nami is the crew’s navigator and later becomes an expert in reading- and to an extent controlling- aspects of the weather. She isn’t as hands-on in fights as some of the other Straw Hats, but she becomes very formidable with a staff. Nani’s goal is to travel and map out the entire world.

Usopp

Between being the crew’s sniper and another member without fruit-given powers or super-strength, Usopp, like Nami, likes to keep a little distance between himself and danger. His weapon of choice switches up a few times, but we primarily see him with an evolving variety of sling shots. Usopp’s dream is to be a brave pirate and warrior like his father.

Vinsmoke Sanji

Much like Zoro, Sanji doesn’t have any superpowers exactly, but he does border on having super-strength. Only Sanji’s strength comes out in barrages of kicks. He never fights with his hands because those are too important to his culinary career. Sanji is the ship’s chef, and if he wasn’t the only one on board with any skill for cooking there’s a decent chance he would have been thrown into the sea by Nami because Sanji is more than a bit of a pervert.

Which member of the Straw Hats is your favorite? Who would you cast as the remaining Straw Hats in live-action? What devil fruit power would you want to have Let us know in the comments!
