The main characters are undergoing some big changes in Season 2 of The Wheel of Time.

Season one of Amazon’s Wheel of Time was a bit hit or miss. Though it had some strong moments it failed to really win over a broad fanbase. That didn’t stop Amazon from forging ahead and making more seasons. In fact, season three is currently filming. Since season one came out, more than a year ago for a long time we only had real drips and drabs of information about the follow-up season. In the past few months, however, a ton of new information has come out, including a release date. Continuing with this trend we’ve recently gotten several new pictures that showcase some major changes for characters.

Perrin’s Eyes

First off, we’ve got a look at Perrin. You’ll notice his eyes have changed color and are now golden. That’s a big deal. In the books, he’s known as Perrin Goldeneyes and it’s his most distinctive feature. This wasn’t some error on the part of season one either. He starts out the story without gold eyes and thanks to his powers, they change. To avoid any major spoilers I won’t say much more. However, it seems clear that one of the character changes in Wheel of Time Season 2 will be focusing on Perrin’s arc.

A New Character Arrives in Season 2

Next up we’ve got a picture of three Aes Sedai. On the left we have Egwene and in the middle is Nynaeve. Both are well-known and returning main characters. However, the one on the right is a newcomer Elayne (played by Ceara Coveney).  She’s another very major character with a role to play throughout the series, showing up in the first book. But the entire section with her was cut from the show. It’s good to see her showing up at last.

Interestingly, while all three are wearing similar clothes, Nynaeve stands out. She’s both got a different cloak and armbands. This likely means that Egwene and Elayne are Novices at this point in the show, but Nynaeve may be Accepted already.

A Man Who is Hard to Change

Here comes Lan! And… he looks like Lan. Not really any change here. The taciturn warder will face some fresh challenges this season. His Aes Sedai has lost her powers. What that means for Lan and what his and Moiraine’s arc this season will be is unknown.

The Biggest Character Change of Them All

Lastly, we’ve got a look at our new Mat Cauthon. The original actor Barney Harris rather mysteriously left the show in the middle of Season 1. Barney had been a real standout among The Wheel of Time cast and his departure was a real shock.  For Wheel of Time Season 2, he’s been replaced by Dónal Finn. They’ve managed a great job at getting Dónal to really look the part of Mat I think. He’s very obviously the character, even if it’s a new actor. How he performs we will just have to wait and see.

Let us know how you think the new season is looking, down in the comments!
