There’s no denying the appeal of a moon and its magic. The light in the darkness. Gentle but mysterious, distant but close. Moon myths are as old as humans, if not older. Little wonder that the pages of D&D’s many worlds are chock full of moons andb their associated deities.
Here are some of our favorite gods and goddesses of the moon(s). Whether wielding magic or just moonlight, these deities leave a lasting impression.
Selune
Selune is the goddess of Faerun’s moon. She also holds dominion over stars and lycanthropes and navigation. Selune is a changing goddess who has been both stern and gentle. She values love and beauty, which often surprises those who do not know her well.
Shar
Alright, Shar is technically a goddess of the night, but she is the Dark Twin of Selune. Her portfolio of the night and darkness encompasses the moon in some religions, mostly the ones that favor evil. She embodies the void and created a Shadow Weave that acts as a dark reflection of the Weave, which is the source of all magic.
Solinari
The sole god of a moon on this list, Solinari is the god of one of Krynn’s three magical moons. Conveniently enough, he rules over the moon, Solinari. Solinari is also the god of good magic, presiding over the mages of the white robes.
Sehanine Moonbow
Of course, no list of D&D moon gods would be complete without mentioning elves. And the elves do not disappoint. Sehanine Moonbow is the elven goddess of the moon, and also the Greyhawk lunar deity.
Elistraee
Even the Drow worship the moon, embodied in Elistraee, the Drow goddess of the moon, freedom, and dance.
