‘The Witcher’ – Transition to Liam Hemsworth’s Geralt to be “Lore Accurate”
The Witcher producers have a plan to make the transition from Henry Cavill to Liam Hemsworth “very lore accurate.”
Season 3 is Henry Cavill’s last. Netflix dropped the news of his departure last fall, and the name of his replacement. The actor had a limited deal with the studio – everyone on the cast renegotiated heading into the fourth season – and decided it was time to leave the show. While there are plenty of fan theories out there, neither the studio or Cavill have expressed exactly why he made the decision.
With the first half of Season 3 out now, there are a lot of questions about how this story moves forward. The show’s producers spoke with Yahoo News about what’s next for the series – including Cavill’s exit and how they’re going to introduce Liam Hemsworth’s Geralt.
“I think the most important thing for us was to make sure [Cavill] was very proud of those last [scenes], invariably those last moments are the ones you leave an audience with, and those last couple episodes a re very strong episodes for him. I think he left with his head held high and passing the reins as many franchises end up doing, passing a title character from one actor to another, and we’re going to be in great hands with Liam.“

“We have a very, very good plan to introduce our new Geralt and our new vision for Geralt with Liam. Not going deeply into those ideas because this will be a huge spoiler, [but] it’s also very, very close to the meta ideas which are deeply embedded in the books, especially in book five. It’s very lore accurate. It’s very close to what was set out in the books and I think this change will be quite flawless. But at the same time it will be a new Geralt, it will be a new face for this character and I think it will also be very, very exciting to see.”

Spoilers Ahead if You Haven’t Read the Books Geralt doesn’t go through big body swap in the book series. He does quit being a Witcher in Tower of the Swallow, which is book 4 or 6 depending. Without knowing which order he’s using its hard to suss out what exactly which “meta ideas” Baginski is referring to. We’ll have to see when Season 4 drops to figure this one out. End Spoilers
Ciri Becomes the Focus
The focus of the show will be moving away from Geralt in upcoming seasons, just as it did with the books. Actress Frey Allan, who plays Ciri, has expressed excitement about working with Hemsworth and what’s to come.
“Time of Contempt is a really good book, some people say it’s the best book of the saga and it’s very rich in the story. I think this was very exciting to do, but especially for [Freya Allan]. This is also the book where Ciri –let’s be blunt about this– becomes the main character of the saga, because this is how it was done in the books, and watching Ciri evolve, and watching Freya evolve as an actress in this season, was incredible, just incredible.“
