Games Workshop has toned down Aeldari and the Strands of Fate plus Towering units and Indirect Fire get a points adjustment.

Warhammer 40,000: 10th Edition might officially have launched just a few short weeks ago but that’s enough time for players to start to notice a few …imbalances. Thankfully, GW is on top of it and has made some moves to correct those issues. There’s been two major changes that have rolled out with this first update to 10th edition. The Strands of Fate ability has been updated and both Towering units and units with Indirect Fire have had a points adjustment.

Aeldari Nerf

First, the Aeldari Strands of Fate army ability receives a change to limit its power early in the game, and prevent several Fate dice being used to overcharge a single powerful attack. Now limited to just one use per phase, Aeldari players will need to think carefully about when to best apply their prognostications – though units who can manipulate the dice, like Farseers, will remain as valuable as ever.

This is a pretty big change for the Strand of Fate. Will it be enough to curb the power of this ability? Personally, I think this is a good limit on the ability. It’s still potent but Aeldari players can’t just dump all 12 of their Fate Dice on a single attack now. Instead they will have to spread out these dice throughout the game. And it’s not like they won’t be able to manipulate them the same way before either.

Towering Units And Indirect Fire

Early games have shown that the ability for particularly massive war machines to loom over terrain and blast vulnerable units to pieces is particularly powerful, especially when entire armies of Towering units like Imperial and Chaos Knights bring the big guns. This is also true of weapons with the Indirect Fire ability, where the cover-ignoring antics of the Desolation Squad are proving tricky for many armies to deal with.

To deal with these changes these units have gotten a points increase. Additionally, there’s a few other changes that have been made to units and points in the game. For example, Death Guard Plague Marines can now be taken in units of seven again. There’s quite a few of these changes spread out throughout the Munitorum Field Manual. All of the changes have been marked in red so you can see them easier.

What do you think of these changes? Did Games Workshop go far enough?
