David Lynch’s ‘Dune’ – Making of Book Chronicles the Story Behind the Sci-Fi Classic
Dive into the story behind David Lynch’s divisive big-screen adaptation of Dune with this behind-the-scenes book.
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two drops tomorrow, but don’t forget about the first time Paul’s story hit theaters back in 1984.
After Alejandro Jodorowsky’s and Ridley Scott’s attempts at adapting Herbert’s novel failed, it went to indie (at the time) director David Lynch. Dune was the largest production he had worked on. Alongside the principal actors, the production required 1,700 crew members, over 20,000 extras, and 80 sets. It was a huge undertaking.
Audiences weren’t sure what to make of the finished product, and it was a box office flop. The movie has since been praised for its vision, production design, and special effects. It has gained a strong fan base over the last several decades–even if its director isn’t among them.
A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch’s Dune
Film writer Max Evry has compiled a years-in-the-making oral history of the 1984 classic. The book includes new interviews with the film’s stars, including Kyle MacLachlan, Sean Young, and others. Plus, creatives that worked on the film, casting agents, insiders, and director David Lynch. Its pages also feature behind-the-scenes photos of miniatures, sets, and filming.
Dune has always been the black sheep of David Lynch’s filmography. After spending two years speaking to dozens of people involved in its making, hopefully readers of this book will come away thinking of Dune not only as a proper Lynch movie, but a worthy entry into the pantheon of sci-fi greats. They will also get hints of how it came to be so compromised, and how mind-blowing it could have been. In our modern era of cookie cutter blockbusters, Dune stands as a glorious oddity worthy of reconsideration.
