The weekend is here. Pop some microwave popcorn, and check out some of the free movies on Tubi. There’s more available than you think.

Streaming has officially taken over; less than 50% of households have traditional cable subscriptions. There are multiple streamers available that aim to offer a varied library, like Netflix, plus specialty streamers like Shudder and Criterion. Choice has never been greater, but that level of choice comes with rising subscription costs. Consumers have to pick and choose (sometimes monthly, based on when shows are running) which services are worth paying for.

One of the fastest climbers in the streaming wars is Tubi. With other services’ subscriptions priced at up to $20 a month, the readily available service with an option to watch without a subscription has become a favorite of budget-conscious consumers.

What Makes Tubi Different?

Tubi offers a wide variety of movies and shows from all genres and across the decades. Their app is available on multiple platforms, from desktop browsers and phones to Roku sticks and Apple TVs. Where they differ is their payment model.

Netflix, Max, or Hulu require a monthly subscription even if you opt for the ad-supported level. Tubi just requires that you create an account with your email address. No payment method is required. They use the over-air network TV model of yesteryear – it’s purely ad-supported.

Tubi’s library sets it apart from other ad-supported streaming services like Freevee and Plex. Its parent company, FOX, is able to secure more licenses than most free options. They offer more, and titles rotate out, so there’s usually something new to watch.

The service offers over 20,000 free shows and movies with titles from Lionsgate, Disney, and Paramount, as well as networks including HBO, Shout Factory, and FOX. They also offer live TV and kids’ programming at no charge. While they’re not as huge as Netflix, they still boast 64 million users a month, and they’re growing fast.

Is Tubi Really Free?

The service and its catalog are entirely ad-supported. Watching Tubi doesn’t require a payment method or the creation of an account. All you have to do is go to the site or open the app, select what you want to watch, and hit play.

Are There Ads During Movies?

There’s no ad-free subscription offered by Tubi; everything has ad breaks. The level of ads you’ll see while watching Tubi is generally lower than what you see on cable channels, but they do appear during shows and movies like cable and over-air. According to the service, Tubi’s ad breaks are about 2 minutes long and happen every 15 minutes.

If you grew up with basic cable, the ad breaks feel about the same as watching a big release on USA or TNT on a Friday night. It’s easy to treat them like we used to – as bathroom or snack breaks.

Original Programming

Tubi has a catalog of original shows and movies, and they plan on making more. The library includes animated shows, movies from a bunch of genres, and some kids and family shows. They have work to do in order to meet the quality of the big streamers, but there are some fun titles. It’s especially good if you’re a low-budget horror or genre movie fan. There are a lot of shark and serial killer movies available, as well as some mockbusters with actual names like Bruce Willis and Tony Todd.
