MTG: Magic’s New Release Schedule Shows Us That Everything Will Become ‘Fortnite’ in the End
Evolution has crabs; games with “seasons” have Fortnite. Magic’s new release schedule is one Griddy-ing Goku away from a Battle Pass.
If you let a crustacean evolve long enough, it becomes a crab. Through a process known as carcinization, a non-crab-like being becomes crab-like. Nature just can’t get enough of the little shelled pinchy guys, because evolution keeps just trying to spit out crabs.
It’s the same for seasonal games. Only instead of eventually becoming crabs, they eventually turn into Fortnites. Packed with guest stars from things that are popular/whoever they can get that sweet sweet ad money from, Fortnite offers a range of characters from Thanos to Goku to most recently Fry and Leela. And no judgement on Fortnite, that game is massively successful and can even be fun.
But Magic’s 2024 release schedule is starting to go down that evolutionary path. Here’s hoping we get some good dances out of it.
Magic’s 2024 Release Schedule – Assassin’s Creed, Fallout, Not-Redwall, and More
Next year’s Magic is going to be pretty spicy. Love it or hate it, Universes Beyond have kicked off a trend, ad they’re more here to stay than ever. Which is fine, because for most that means they get to have Brotherhood of Steel Power Armor which will probably be an artifact that equips and maybe plays around with some kind of radiation mechanic. It’s anyone’s guess, really.
But what a lineup. Starting with Ravnica Remastered, which should satisfy those who went out and got their Guild Signet tattoos and have been wondering if they’d ever get a set again. Followed closely by Murders at Karlov Manor, which is the first of four Standard-legal sets (also on the mean streets of Ravnica).
Then there’s Fallout and then, at last, we get to Outlaws of Thunder Junction. Thunder Junction will be Magic’s first “Western” themed set, which is hard to believe, but is in fact true.
Though it is a new set, there are still plenty of familiar characters in here. Including Cowboy Vraska, Cowboy Rakdos, and possibly Cowboy Jace?
Then you have Assassin’s Creed and Modern Horizons III which are fine. And then we get to Bloomburrow. Which is MTG’s legally distinct Redwall. It’s a set that promises to see everything scaled around Mice. Mice in Bloomburrow are 1/1’s, so what passes for a 4/4 in another set might be absolutely colossal here. Also, no humans to be found anywhere!
Finally, Duskmourn brings the Bloodborne vibes to round out the year.
What do you think of the 2024 lineup?
