‘Dolmenwood’: Fairy Tale & Folklore TTRPG Raises More Than Half a Million in Its First Day
Dolmenwood is an upcoming fantasy TTRPG set in a world inspired by fairy tales and folklore. And it’s doing numbers on Kickstarter now.
Stories about the fae are enjoying a sort of resurgence right now. From the folklore and dark fantasy that inspires RPGs like Vaesen, to the newly Kickstarting Dolmenwood RPG, it seems like dark, whimsical, weird stories are making their way back to the forefront. And while I’ll be sad to say goodbye to the era of mecha domination, if Dolmenwood‘s Kickstarter success is anything to go by, it looks like the era of being careful about who you give your name and gifts to is at hand.
Well deserved, though. Dolmenwood is a gorgeous book and is full of “delectable extras”. Not hard to see why this game absolutely shattered its funding goal in the first 45 minutes, more than doubling it at press time. As is often the case these days, you don’t have to judge this game by its Kickstarter campaign, take the rules for a spin with a free quickstart guide included below!
Dolmenwood – Fairytales & Folklore Collide With Fantasy Adventure
Welcome, traveler, to the fungus-wracked tangle of Dolmenwood, and beware, for all here is not as it seems…
Dolmenwood is a fantasy adventure game set in a lavishly detailed world inspired by the fairy tales and eerie folklore of the British Isles. Like traditional fairy tales, Dolmenwood blends the dark and whimsical, the wondrous and weird.
Streamlined rules and helpful introductory materials guide novice players, while unique new magic and monsters bring a fresh sense of the unknown to veteran role-players. We’re launching the three Dolmenwood core books, plus a range of delectable extras.
Dolmenwood is launching with three core books, a Player’s Book, Monster Book, and Campaign Book. The Player’s Book, as the name suggests, has the full set of rules plus all the character options needed to play in the game.
You’ll find the six different kindreds (humans and a handful of fae-inspired creatures), and nine different character classes:
- Cleric
- Enchanter
- Fighter
- Friar
- Hunter
- Knight
- Magician
- Minstrel
- Thief
And everything else you need to jump feet first into the game.
The campaign book is a combination campaign setting book and GM’s guide, including all the lore, locations, and dozens of maps needed to start running the game.
The Monster Book is a manual full of monsters and other creatures that adventurers might find themselves having to contend with.
If fairy tales are coming back, get ready for a whole lot more weird mushrooms and mushroom people!
