‘Shadow of the Weird Wizard’ RPG Hits Kickstarter, Funds in a Day
One of the big 5E alternatives launched on Kickstarter this week; Shadow of the Weird Wizard funded in a day, with good reason.
One of the go-to alternatives to 5th Edition is Shadow of the Demon Lord. If you’ve never heard of it, you’re missing out on some of the crunchiest, streamlined “fantasy adventures” out there right now. It’s been lauded for its customizable classes, as well as the sheer breadth of its spells and abilities.
And now Shadow of the Weird Wizard is here to take the dark fantasy aspects of SotDL and make them more like high fantasy. Some have called it grey fantasy. Either way, it’s a punchier system. An evolution of the “Demon Lord” engine that makes for a much more exploration and heroic type of fantasy.
With thousands of character types possible, there’s a ton of stuff to love about the system. That’s why the Kickstarter hit its goal in under a day. Now, all that’s left is to see how many stretch goals it can knock down!
Shadow of the Weird Wizard
Shadow of the Weird Wizard is a fantasy roleplaying game in which you and your friends assume the roles of characters who explore the borderlands and make them safe for the refugees escaping the doom that has befallen the old country. Unsafe are these lands: the Weird Wizard released monsters to roam the countryside, cruel faeries haunt the shadows, undead drag themselves free from their tombs, and old, ancient evils stir once more. If the displaced people would rebuild their lives, they need heroes to protect them.
Created by one of the designers behind the 5th Edition of Dungeons & Dragons, Shadow of the Weird Wizard stands as the next evolutionary step of the game system that powers Shadow of the Demon Lord. Like its predecessor, Weird Wizard offers exciting adventures, tight campaigns, streamlined rules, and deep customization that reveals itself as you play the game. Best of all, anyone familiar with d20-style roleplaying games can find it easy to understand how the game works and plays, making it appealing to gamers of all ages and levels of experience.
Over the years, the gameplay has evolved. And Weird Wizard brings about a shift in tone. Now it’s not quite Evil Dead meets Diablo, but is a more “family-friendly” version of the game. Its characters are more heroic, and its stories more epic. And you can take it for a spin right now by checking out the Quick Play link below.
That Wizard sure is Weird. But the game is a ton of fun!
