‘Sea of Thieves’ Board Game Has a Lot Going on Under the Deck
For a game like the Sea of Thieves board game, don’t go expecting it to do any attempt to close you into just one way of playing.
The salt of the air, the creak of the wood, the glint of the gold in your pocket. There’s nothing quite like being a pirate. Unless, for some reason, you’re against going for months adrift at sea with horrible living conditions while scurvy eats away at your remaining teeth. But at least you get an equal share of the prize!
Fortunately, there are better ways to be a terror of the seas. One such method is Sea of Thieves: Voyage of Legend by Steamforged Games.
Sea of Thieves Board Game Overview
Sea of Thieves: Voyage of Legend is a competitive open-sea game where players compete to become the pirate of legend by earning the most reputation. This is mostly done by turning in loot gathered from either buried treasure, monsters, or other players.
Games like this thrive best when they let the players roam free and the Sea of Thieves board game is all about roaming. Even just having two ships gives players a ton more freedom in their actions. It allows players to customize each ship to a specific task, and therefore overall strategy.
Ships can be upgraded and customized with special crew members, and assisted by one-time-use Fortune cards. This means you can have one ship be your merchant ship, zipping around picking up loot. Meanwhile, your other ship is outfitted with a battery of cannons and doesn’t let any treasure by without taking a “tax”.
Other Pirates Aren’t the Only Dangers
If you’ve played the Sea of Thieves video game, you’re probably waiting for the best parts. Well, don’t worry, they are here. Sea of Thieves: Voyage of Legend includes the Kraken, Megalodon, Skeleton Fortress, and Skeleton ships as NPC monsters.
They each have their own unique way of being dealt with, which is great. It would be so easy to just say the Kraken has 8 hit points and the Megalodon has 10 HP, but Steamforged didn’t go the easy route. Each monster has a unique little mini-system in order to defeat it.
Overall, the Sea of Thieves board game is a great middle-weight open-world game. It allows players to really feel their power level increasing as they progress. It is very freeing and satisfying to be dropped into this game and feel like there are a dozen options available even on the first turn.
And so, if you’re wanting a great pirate simulator board game, definitely pick up Sea of Thieves: Voyage of Legend.
