Patch 12 is out for Warhammer 40K: Darktide and with it, a difficulty mode that feels “fluff accurate” considering you’re a puny mortal.

Say what you will about the current issues that Warhammer 40K: Darktide is grappling with. The community has been crying out for better crafting and, most importantly, more/newer content—everything from levels to enemy types to subclasses—for a while. But while the new patch, Patch 12, isn’t the perfect solution to Warhammer 40K: Darktide‘s woes, it goes a long way by bringing the pain.

The new Auric-level operations and Maelstrom missions feel like they accurately scratch the lore-friendly itch that leaves you high and dry in most 40K games. If you’ve ever wanted to feel stressed about pox walkers, the new modes can be absolutely brutal in the best ways.

The new patch not only rewards you with increased payouts for taking part in Quickplay mode, it also enhances the difficulty. Aurc-level operations are no joke. You’ll feel the pain of Chaos when pox walkers and hounds come upon you, let alone Chaos Spawn, who are famous for getting shot to death before they can even come close to doing anything in the tabletop game.

Now they live up to the fluff. These high intensity missions bring a ton of challenge. And while you have to be level 30 to play them in the first place, odds are good you’re already there if you’re still playing Darktide. And if you’re newer, one of the other things that Patch 12 does for Warhammer 40K: Darktide is knock down the XP needed to level up by about 20% on average.

Additionally, the total available missions on the normal operations board have been increased. Meaning that you can hopefully get a wider variety. Which is hopeful groundwork for newer missions in the future.

This patch isn’t a total panacaea, but it does give Warhammer 40K: Darktide a nice, challenging shot in the arm.
