A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy “Far, Far Away”: ‘Ahsoka’ Episode 6 Breakdown
As the season finale comes within sight, everything on Ahsoka is coming together and some big reveals are finally here!
A LOT happened this week on Ahsoka. If you were waiting for it, it’s probably finally here. So let’s jump right in and break down what happened, what we noticed, and where it’s all headed.
As always, in order to break down this week’s episode of Ahsoka, I will need to spoil large portions of what’s happened in the episode. If you haven’t watched yet, proceed at your own risk.
Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away…
Do you know how the famous text crawl starts? The episode stars with Ahsoka and Huyang in their ship in a Purrgil’s mouth, jumping through hyperspace. And since they’re on a galactic road trip, it’s time for some long conversations. The stories of the galaxy’s history that Huyang used to tell the younglings in the temple came up, and Ahsoka requested that the droid re-tell her one of them- his choice.
So Huyang starts of his story with “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.” And then the episode title is revealed to be “Far, Far Away.” This is especially fitting because everyone is indeed headed far, far away.
Night Sister Great Mothers
Morgan, Baylan, Shin, and Sabine arrive at Peridia, the apparent homeworld of the Night Sisters. It’s revealed that the Purrgil come here quite a bit and the space around the planet is a Purrgil graveyard, but also that the Night Sisters at one point long ago rode the whales through Hyperspace.
The group gets to the planet and we see the three Great Mothers who still reside here. We’ve met a Night Sister Great Mother before in Mother Talzin during The Clone Wars. But these three are living on Peridia in more-or-less seclusion. They reference Thrawn and that he’s on his way, and throughout the episode talk in unison or mention ‘threads.’
There are loose threads, unforeseen threads, threads of destiny, just a lot of thread talk. And all of this reminds me of the Fates or Weird Sisters from Greek mythology. Or, perhaps more aptly, the Three Witches or Weird sisters from Shakespeare’s Macbeth. There they give the title character prophesies, clues, and eventually predict his demise.
Thrawn!
After weeks of waiting, Thrawn is finally here. Soon after the introduction of the Great Mothers and their promise that Thrawn was on his way, his ship, the Chimaera pulled into the sky. It’s clearly still very damaged from its brush with the Purrgil and repairs as well as damage is still clear to see. But so is the remains of the famous design on the underside of the customized Star Destroyer.
Next, we see a bunch of Storm Troopers who have also seen better days. Their armor is damaged and has been repaired repeatedly. But in some cases, the armor has been repaired with what looks like gold. In our world a similar Japanese technique of joining things together or repairing broken things with gold is known as ‘kintsugi’ and while this is something that looks neat on screen, it’s likely a reference to Thrawn’s interest in the artistic. Also, when you’re exiled to the farthest reaches of space, sometimes you have to make repairs with whatever you have on hand at the time.
Finally, Thrawn joins and is seemingly ready to pick up immediately where Rebels left off. He recognizes Baylan’s name from the history of the Clone Wars and the Jedi Order, and he remembers Sabine very well. He sends Sabine out to find Ezra with a warning that once his ship leaves she’ll be stranded, and then quickly sends Baylan and Shin to kill Sabine and Ezra should she find him. And then he tells Morgan that he’d be just as happy to leave without the lot of them; it doesn’t matter if they all kill each other or are all stranded here forever.
Space Wolves
Sabine rides off to find Ezra on a new galactic beast we haven’t seen before that the Closed Captioning reveals to be a “Howler.” But these things remind me a lot of vornskyr. If you’re not familiar, vornskyr are a different variety of space wolves from the Heir to the Empire series. They’re somewhat Force-sensitive and use that power to hunt. They’re also giant, loyal, vicious, and the howlers look exactly how I pictured them.
Ezra!
Sabine encounters a group of nomadic hermit crab people who seem to know who she’s talking about when she mentions Ezra and bring her back to their village. Where Ezra has been living! The reunion is very sweet, and while Sabine doesn’t want to talk about the specifics of exactly how she got there, the two will likely catch up on the last decade or so soon. Also, Sabine finding Ezra in the hermit-crab village was very reminiscent of discovering Leia in the Ewok village in Return of the Jedi.
All of the major players are finally back on the board. But with just a few episodes left in the season, how do you think everything will get wrapped up? Do you think things will get wrapped up at all, or are you expecting a season two? Which character introduction were you most excited to finally get to? Let us know in the comments!
May the Force be with you, adventurers!
