The Points

Let’s just start with the simple stuff first. As you can see there’s quite a few points tweaks in the new update. These changes should be reflected in the AoS App if you’re up-to-date with that. Be sure to check your respective army lists and update those points. Soulblight Gravelords got hit pretty hard with a massive amount of points increases as well as some rules changes, too.

General Changes

There’s some big changes to both Rupture and Merciless Blizzard which are both unique to this GHB. Rupture can now cause D3 mortal wounds to the wizard that is bonded to an Incarnate or Endless Spell as well as dispelling them (or dropping the level of the Incarnate). You also can no longer target friendly Incarnates with Rupture.

Merciless Blizzard can no longer be cast by a wizard that moved or was set up in the phase. So no more teleporting the casters around to get into Blizzard range.

There were also some more targeted changes to two Endless Spells (Malevolent Maelstrom and Umbral Spellportal). And finally, one of the special rules in the mission No Risk Without Reward has been updated as well. Wizards now explode on a 4+ when they die and that can cause some mortal wounds to units nearby.

More Targeted Changes

You can read the changes below for each of the Grand Alliances. Destruction does not have any other updates however.

Now we aren’t going to go over each change but I did want to call out the Soulblight Gravelords got hit with Spirit Gale getting a nerf. It can only hit up to 3 units normally, and on a 9+ and unbound it can target  6 different units. Another change impacts the Ossiarch Bonereaper’s recursion for the larger models. When the Immortis Guard or Necropolis Stalkers come back on a 3+ they only come back with 1 wound. Personally, I understand this change but would actually like to see this same change apply to ALL models that get brought back from destroyed across all armies.

Obviously there’s other big changes for armies so there’s going to be a bit of an adjustment period for a lot of folks in the next few weeks. On top of the fact that Orruks are getting the Ironjawz update and there’s a new batch of Armies of Renown coming with the upcoming Dawnbringers: Book II. It’s going to be an interesting watch to see how the meta reacts!

If you want to learn more about these changes and get some of the specific reasons why then check out the full Metawatch article and watch the video direct from GW:
