D&D: ‘Unearthed Arcana’ Playtest 7 Revisits Sorcerer, Barbarian, Warlock, Wizard, and Fighter
Unearthed Arcana – Playtest 7 brings some new feedback and big changes to Sorcerers, Warlocks, Wizards, Fighters, and Barbarians.
Unearthed Arcana Playtest 7 dropped yesterday afternoon. And with it, comes a brand new look at the classes from playtest 5. Both the Barbarian and Fighter get some experimental new subclasses in this playtest packet. Including a Barbarian who gets to play around with the primal magic of the World Tree, and a Fighter who’s good at using improvised weapons.
Yeah. One of these things is definitely not like the other. It feels like WotC realized they let Matt Mercer go too far with the Echo Knight Fighter, and they’ve spitting on Fighters’ faces and telling them it’s raining ever since. But, there are some changes to all the subclasses too.
We’ll be doing a deeper dive in the coming days. But, for now, take a look at Unearthed Arcana, Playtest 7!
Unearthed Arcana Playtest 7 – Barbarians Get Magic, Fighters Get To… Throw a Cup Kind of Okay, Warlocks Get Their Identity Back
This playtest document is part of a series of Unearthed Arcana articles that present material designed for the 2024 version of the Player’s Handbook. The material here uses the rules in the 2014 Player’s Handbook, except where noted. After we conclude the public playtest for the Player’s Handbook, Unearthed Arcana will explore material for the Dungeon Master’s Guide and Monster Manual.
Unearthed Arcana Playtest 7 walks back a few other big changes. Class-specific spell lists are back. Gone are the Primal, Arcane, and Divine spell lists. Which will make it hard to future proof this edition of D&D. It does fix some of the parts where these rules break down.
But it also squeezes each class into their own specific box a little bit more. At any rate, other big changes include:
- Warlocks have Pact magic again
- Fighters get a Brawler Subclass
- Barbarians Bring the Zealot alongside the new World Tree subclass
- Brutal Critical is Better
- Wizards can switch Cantrips
- Memorize Spell isn’t a spell anymore
Start the weekend off right by reading through all the new rules!
