From Magic the Gathering originals to fandom crossovers like Lord of the Rings, MagicCon 2023 cosplay has it all!

It’s not very often that I get to cover new genres as a cosplay writer. As Bell of Lost Souls focuses more on Magic the Gathering and its myriad of characters, we have a whole new world of cosplay to discover! We recently received the invitation to experience the cosplay of MagicCon 2023, and we’re excited to show you what we found. We have some exciting, exclusive cosplay to share today!

While Wizards of the Coast has a plethora of interesting properties to cover, Magic the Gathering is one that, until very recently, I had little knowledge of. At first glance, its characters are dynamic, fantastical, and imaginative (to say the least). The MtG community hosts several events each year that have cosplay competitions, and this fall’s Las Vegas event was a riot of colorful, creative cosplay.

MagicCon Cosplay Competition

MagicCon has it all. From ethereal creatures to horrific monsters, Lord of the Rings references, and some downright ridiculous things I can’t even begin to describe (like this guy below!), there’s a bit of everything for everyone. Their cosplay competition packs a hefty punch with an astounding set of prize support and boasts some incredibly detail-oriented cosplayers.

CreativeKittyStudios‘s winning cosplay had over 200 hours of chainmail work alone. The event itself is beautifully organized, well articulated online, and overall seems like a blast to experience! There is a much larger per-average volume of original character cosplays, which is really cool to see. It takes cosplay to another level when someone creates a brand-new character and story from scratch!

MagicCon 2023 Cosplays

We’re stepping into the lab with this intricate Simic Detective cosplay. Many cosplayers chose to create their own character for the competition, drawing from in-game inspiration. Detectives are quite popular at the moment. The SFX work on this cosplay is what makes it stand out. The beautiful texturing of the paint and textural work is fascinating.

This artist tackles the Underworld chef in a simple, visual, and incredibly clever cosplay. There are so many characters that would be hilarious to bring to life, and this is a perfect example. The tool belt with the Salt and Pepper is a perfect chef’s kiss on this look!

It’s no surprise this next cosplay took home all the bacon- it’s stunning. With over 200 hours of handwork going into the impressive chainmail, every bit of this cosplay is a wow factor. Clean lines, art-accurate… this cosplay is incredible. Congratulations to the winner!

Fantastical Cosplays of MagicCon 2023

If you’re a Tolkein-head who can’t get enough of Middle-Earth, you’ll love this cosplay. Fangorn was brought to MagicCon 2023 with this stunning cosplay. Check out the moss and flora detail work, it’s stunning. They even got his little grabby hands just right!

Who doesn’t love a bit of dark and ominous in their lives? This cosplay is ALL about the attitude. From top to toe, this cosplay is beautifully assembled. It’s a highly imaginative original character based on Rakdos. It’s satiny textures pop right off the picture, and that grin says it all!

One cosplay to rule them all… This physical manifestation of the One Ring card is just perfect. The gold paint on the ring is gorgeous, and it’s absolutely recognizable at a glance. The attention to detail on the card face is excellent as well!

This last cosplay is all about sewing and construction skills. The bodice work looks so tricky, and those rosettes are impressive! The entire look is just awe-inspiring, showing off this powerfully popular character.
