Baron Helmut Zemo is back with a new Threat 4 version that allows him to lead Hydra with some new tricks.

Atomic Mass Games is previewing the new Baron Helmut Zemo from the new core set. The Hydra mainstay is back with some changes thanks to this alternate version of him so let’s get into what makes him tick!

“A renaissance man in many ways, Helmut Zemo is a gifted scientist and engineer, as well as a fighting man with few equals. On top of his own personal accomplishments, he has followed in his family’s aspirations of leadership by ruling many a team of supervillains and nefarious individuals. Allied with Hydra, he has even been seen leading the Army of Evil.”

Baron Helmut Zemo

The very first thing to note is that his name is now Baron Helmut Zemo but his alter ego is still Helmut Zemo — so no, you still can’t run both versions together in standard play. That said, he’s got some other changes, too. This new Threat 4 version shares many of the same physical stats but he does have 1 more point in physical defense. However, he’s now only move Medium instead of Long.

Aside from that His basic attack Sword Strike has the same stats for range and dice but it’s swapped out Bleed for Pierce and Dancing Strike. These changes do make his basic attack better but again, you would expect an improvement with the increase in threat. That said, Zemo did ditch Steel Rush for two other attacks with Adhesive X Pistol and Coup De Grace. If you know his backstory then the pistol is kinda funny. And while he does lose some movement from Steel Rush, he does swap that out with some versatility. Plus Coup De Grace hits harder (for 1 more energy) and also can provide that Short advance, too.

Baron Helmut Zemo now has Quick Step for some bonus movement as well which feels like a downgrade to Charge for the same energy cost. He’s also ditched his old Counter-Strike completely. That said he now has the Army of Evil (Affiliation: Hydra) which will help you out in other, more tactical ways when he’s the chosen leader. He’s still got Strategic Genius which functions the same, too. Master Duelist is the replacement for Master Swordsmen and is completely different. It no longer cost energy and it’s a nice way to get a bonus if you do two Sword Strikes in quick succession. One final thing to note is that his injured side also has 6 health instead of 5 so that’s a nice boost.

Is this version better than the old core set version? Well, he’s certainly different! And yes, he’s better in some ways for sure — but you’re paying that extra point of threat so he better be. I think his biggest boost is the Leadership skill change so that if you did want to run a mostly Hydra list you’ve got another leader option. He’s got some good attack options and the Adhesive X Pistol will certainly come in handy!

The new Baron Helmut Zemo is coming with the updated Core Set for Marvel: Crisis Protocol which is slated to hit shelves in October!

Zemo or Red Skull? Who would you take for your Head of Hydra? (Trick question — you take both because it’s in the name.)
