‘Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’ and ‘Survivor’ – Games That Cast Huge Ripples Through the Galaxy
The Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor games are incredibly popular. And you can see hints of them throughout the galactic fandom.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order came out in 2019, followed by Star Wars Jedi: Survivor in 2023. And it’s fair to say that these games are really darn popular. Supposedly, a third is already in the works. But who knows how long it would take for that to be completed and playable.
In the meantime though, the Star Wars Jedi games have cemented their place in the galaxy; yes as good games. But they have also left ripples throughout the greater galaxy with Easter Eggs and references showing up in other Star Wars media.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Released on November 15th, 2019 for the PlayStation 4 and XBox systems, Fallen Order followed a brand new character, Cal Kestis. He was a padawan survivor of Order 66 and has since gone on to live a quiet life on the junkyard planet of Bracca. That is until his identity is accidently revealed and the Inquisitors decide to come pay him a little visit.
From there he gets off-world, joins a Rebellion-friendly ship crew, and goes on a mission to recover a lost Jedi holocron. Despite the story being mostly made up of brand-new characters, Jedi: Fallen Order brings a few familiar faces back into the mix, including Saw Gerrera and Darth Vader.
“You would be wise to surrender.”
“Yeah, probably.”
– Darth Vader and Cal Kestis
But perhaps most important to the galaxy’s story so far, Fallen Order introduces a brand new Inquisitor with a past we eventually come to learn. And while they’d previously just been some of the scariest bad guys around, this game lets us know that they’re also complex and often tragic characters.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Taking place five years after the events of Fallen Order, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was released on April 28th, 2023. Once again following Cal, the previous game’s crew has split off on their own separate journeys and adventures. But Cal’s number one priority is still fighting the Empire.
Both of these games saw a lot of success, both critically and among fans. In fact, Survivor managed to beat out many of Fallen Orders review scores by a few points and outsold its predecessor by about thirty percent. Rumors of a third game were almost immediate, and it’s looking more and more likely that production will be underway for a third installment of the Star Wars Jedi series just as soon as possible.
Easter Eggs and References
Star Wars is known for its Easter Eggs and references. Television shows always contain a ton of nods to books and comics, including introducing entire characters who had previously only appeared on the page. For example, Marshal Cobb Vanth showed up in The Mandalorian after being mentioned in Chuck Wendig’s trilogy of novels, Aftermath.
Similarly, Black Krrsantan appeared in The Book of Boba Fett. But fans may have remembered him from the comics as one of Doctor Aphra’s frienemies. And of course, the Star Wars Jedi games are full of their own little Easter Eggs.
But what may be more interesting is that Easter Eggs with origins in the Star Wars Jedi games are beginning to appear in the Star Wars television shows.
Most recently, episode 6 of Ahsoka showed some mysterious-looking runes in the background of a shot featuring Thrawn. These same runes can be found in Jedi: Fallen Order and are linked to the mysterious, ancient, and dangerous Zeffo. Whether this is simply a fun Easter Egg for fans with eagle eyes or a hint as to what will be found on this planet remains to be seen.
Additionally, when we first meet Cal he is working as a scrapper on Bracca. This same scrapyard planet appears in The Bad Batch in no fewer than three episodes.
Was Temuera Morrison in Jedi: Survivor?
Yes, he was! Temuera Morrison has appeared in quite a few Star Wars video games as various clones, troopers, or Fetts. And he has a guest cameo in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor as Boba Fett.
How Long Are the Star Wars Jedi Games?
Since video gameplay relies heavily on the player’s skill, patience, free time, and the sliding scale of dedication to 100% completion vs. finishing off the story, video games don’t have a concrete length. However, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is usually completed in 17-25 hours. Similarly, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor takes most players about 19-20 hours to complete.
How Many Planets are in the Star Wars Jedi Games?
Jedi: Fallen Order came with seven planets, but only Bogano, Zeffo, Sashyyyk, Dathomir, and Ilum were explorable locations.
Jedi: Survivor features seven planets, Coruscant, Koboh, Jedha, Tanalorr, Shattered Moon, and Nova Garon are listed as player locations. And all of them can be explored by the player. That said, Shattered Moon is obviously not a planet, but a rogue moon or ploonet. And Nova Garon is an Empire Bureau tucked into an asteroid.
When Do the Star Wars: Jedi Games Take Place?
Jedi: Fallen Order takes place in 14 BBY. This is about five years after Order 66, and fourteen years before the events of A New Hope.
Jedi: Survivor takes place about five years after that in 9 BBY. This is roughly the same time as the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series.
