Warhammer 40K: More Codex Space Marine Rule Reveals
The Space Marines are getting their new codex and we’re getting a look at a few more Detachment rules from Games Workshop.
As we learned in the previous previews for the Space Marines Detachments aren’t Chapter specific. While some Chapters might be more the thematically inclined to use a specific Detachment they aren’t forced into using it — that choice is left up to the player. This opens the door for some more options for the players are large and some new spins on classic styles of play. Today, we’re getting a few more looks at these rules as well as some suggestions on how to use them direct from GW.
“The Stormlance Task Force, for instance, contains several Enhancements and Stratagems geared towards Mounted units like Outriders and Invader ATVs. However, their Detachment Rule Lightning Assault doesn’t require that keyword, so all your units can charge turn after turn.”
While Lightning Assault might be best suited to a mounted army there’s no reason you can’t use this on a foot-slogging horde of Space Marines. GW suggests using this in lieu of spending points on Transport options and that could work. However, I like their follow-up suggestion to combo this with units that have the Hammer of Wrath rule instead:
Being able to still charge after Falling Back or Advancing means once you get in Engagement Range you can basically generate free mortal wounds because you can get those charges off. On your turn, charge in there for the mortal wound hits. Did you get charged first? Fall back and then charge right back in combat!
This can also be used in concert with Wind-Swift Evasion, too. Now, let’s check out some stealthy options…
The Vanguard Spearhead is you sneaky Marine option. That’s best illustrated with their Detachment Rule Shadow Masters:
This ability works for all Adeptus Astartes units. GW’s protip here is think outside your standard options and go with things that are harder to catch like say a Stormraven Gunship. Honestly, that’s not a terrible idea! Fast moving flyers that can keep enemies outside of 12″ will be pretty annoying to try and take out with shooting.
“All the stealth in the world won’t help if you can’t kill your targets on arrival, and a quick Strike from the Shadows Stratagem will help out. Try using it on a Desolation Squad combined with their Targeter Optics ability for some hyper-accurate fire support.”
If you’re already staying outside of 12″ you might as well pop Strike From The Shadows to get some extra punch for your shots. Now, unlike Shadow Masters, this only applies to Adeptus Astartes Infantry. Good thing those Stormravens have a transport capacity, right?
It’s going to be interesting to see what players do with these various Detachments as you can use them for ANY Space Marine armies now. This is good news for anyone looking to change things up as they can drastically alter the way your army plays without actually changing out any models.
What you think of these new Space Marine Detachments?
