All of the New Horror Movies Coming Out this Spooky Season

Spooky season is upon us and there will be plenty of new stories to terrify and delight. Check out October’s new horror movies.

This year offers scares on the big screen and on streaming from new voices and horror masters. And this year we get the bonus of a bunch of Friday the 13th releases right in the middle of it.

Appendage – Hulu Now

A young fashion designer’s anxieties and self-doubt start to manifest physically. As her self-esteem falls to new lows, the appendage it creates gains power. Then she discovers she’s not alone in her plight. It’s twisty, unpredictable, and a story body horror fans will appreciate.

V/H/S/85 – Shudder October 6th

The found footage franchise returns with new tales from the time of giant camcorders, CRT TVs that weighed over 50lbs, and MTV was about music.

Unveiled through a made-for-TV documentary, five chilling tales emerge: scientists observe an unusual boy fixated on his TV, kids embark on a lake skiing adventure, a TV crew fights to survive a natural disaster, the early days of VR awaken something terrifying, and a deadly dream is captured on tape. Sinister secrets of the 1980s come to life in a way you’ve never seen before.

Totally Killer – Prime Video October 6th

Kiernan Shipka stars in this retro slasher that pays tribute to final girls.

Thirty-five years after the shocking murders of three teens, an infamous killer returns on Halloween night to claim a fourth victim. When 17-year-old Jamie comes face-to-face with the masked maniac, she accidentally time-travels back to 1987. Forced to navigate the unfamiliar culture, Jamie teams up with her teenage mother to take down the psycho once and for all.

The Exorcist: Believer – Theaters October 6th

This year marks fifty years since William Friedkin’s classic was released.

A new chapter begins when two girls encounter a powerful demonic force. When parents don’t find medical answers to their daughter’s plight, they turn to someone who has battled this before–Chris MacNeil. This is a remix rather than a remake. The story only recognizes William Friedkin’s classic and doesn’t include Pazuzu, the demon from the other movies.

Pet Sematary – Paramount+ October 6th

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, director of the 2019 reboot, returns with a terrifying prequel starring David Duchovny.

In 1969, a young Jud Crandall is set to leave his hometown of Ludlow, Maine in search of his life’s purpose. Before he makes it out, however, Jud and his childhood friends encounter an ancient evil that has gripped Ludlow since its founding.

The Fall of the House of Usher – Netflix October 12th

The main story focuses on the Usher family. They lead lives of wealth, privilege, and power thanks to the pharmaceutical empire they’ve created. The ruthless siblings, Roderick and Madeline Usher, at the head of the corporation, have made enemies along the way. One of them has started killing the heirs to the Usher fortune. Someone from Roderick and Madeline Usher’s past.

GoosebumpsHulu October 13th

Looking for something you can watch with your family? This series adapts R. L. Stine’s tween-friendly books into on-screen scares.

Plunging viewers into a world of mystery and suspense, the new Goosebumps series follows a group of five high schoolers as they embark on a shadowy and twisted journey to investigate the tragic passing three decades earlier of a teen named Harold Biddle — while also unearthing dark secrets from their parents’ past.

John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams – Peacock October 13th

Horror maestro John Carpenter explores the evil that lurks in the burbs in this series–there are six episodes in total.

Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has finally found her dream – a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world. But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat.

Dark Harvest – Digital October 13th

This tale of sacrifice and evil is based on the award-winning novel by Norman Partridge.

In a cursed town, the annual harvest becomes a brutal battle for survival. On Halloween 1963, Sawtooth Jack, a terrifying legend, rises from the cornfields, threatening the town’s children. Groups of boys unite to defeat the murderous scarecrow before midnight. 

The Conference – Netflix October 13th

Do you prefer your horror comes with a side of black comedy? This is your bet this month.

The Conference is a comedy slasher about a team building conference attended by municipal employees that spirals into a nightmare when accusations of corruption begin to circulate and plague the work environment. Simultaneously, a mysterious figure begins stalking and murdering the participants, one by one in this Swedish comedy slasher.

Five Nights at Freddy’s – Theaters October 27th

Based on the true horrors of the 1980s – I’m looking at you Billy Bob Brockoli – 5 Nights at Freddy’s challenges players to survive a haunted family center. After nearly a decade of terrifying those who dare play it, the hit horror game is finally making it to the big screen this Halloween. Complete with full-sized animatronics created and operated by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

When Evil Lurks – Shudder October 27th

A farming town in the countryside of Argentina discovers a demon is about to be born in their midst. Everything the residents do to stop it makes things worse, their fear grows and makes the malevolent force more powerful. Can they escape?

Sister Death – Netflix October 27th

From director Paco Plaza, one of the minds behind the Rec movie series.

In post-war Spain, Narcisa, a young novice with supernatural powers, arrives at a former convent, now a school for girls, to become a teacher. As the days go by, the strange events and increasingly disturbing situations that torment her will eventually lead her to unravel the terrible skein of secrets that surround the convent.

Suitable Flesh – Theaters/Digital October 27th

It wouldn’t be spooky season without a new H.P. Lovecraft adaptation. This time it’s a loose retelling of “The Thing on the Doorstep” from director Joe Lynch.

Psychiatrist Elizabeth Derby becomes obsessed with helping a young patient suffering extreme personality disorder. But it leads her into dark occult danger as she tries to escape a horrific fate.
