High-Fantasy Strategy Game ‘WarBonds’ is a Board Game for Wargamers
What makes something a board game versus a war game? Who knows?! Thankfully, WarBonds doesn’t worry about all that and just does it all.
Who doesn’t love a good, heavy strategy tabletop game? Unfortunately, a lot of war games require a lot of planning and setup before you can jump in and play. Plus, each turn can take ages while your opponent carefully calculates each minute detail of their units’ turns.
But what if you could get that same war game experience without any of that hassle? Welcome to WarBonds: Battle for Vitoria.
What Is WarBonds?
WarBonds: Battle for Vitoria is a competitive strategy game set in a world of fantasy, war, and ideological dominance. Players take the role of warlords, scouring the land for allies to join their army, albeit sometimes temporarily. WarBonds has tons of different units to recruit, each with unique stats, abilities, keywords, and alignment.
There are two separate versions available: Apprentice rules and Master rules. The Master rules version takes all the gameplay from the Apprentice version and adds in even more mechanics and systems, making a heavily strategic game even more strategic. But for now, we’re going to hit the highlights of the Apprentice rules.
What Makes WarBonds So Strategic?
Each warlord has their own alignment, either Chaos or Law and sometimes Good or Evil as well. Units also have an alignment and don’t often get on with warlords with viewpoints outside their own. This means that not only does each warlord have their own set of stats and abilities making them unique, but the units that will stay by their side also differ.
A lot of things set WarBonds apart from other strategy war board games, but collectively, the sheer depth of the game makes that clear from the start.
There are rules for flying units engaging in combat in the sky. Plus, there are rules for engaging in an honorable duel with another warlord. There are rules for giving a rousing speech in order to sway the public to your side. There are so many systems to engage with, that every round is a whirlwind of options.
