If you had any doubts that reboot was going to abandon the Troma formula, this The Toxic Avenger red band trailer will reassure you.

Troma is known for low-budget and shock-sploitatitive Z-movies filled with nudity, violence, gore, anarchistic humor, and social commentary. Horror and cult fans are very familiar with the studio’s style–it’s as recognizable as Hammer or the early Universal monster movies.

The original Toxic Avenger is a classic and really defines what the Troma style is. The satirical, grown-ups-only splatter movie was released in 1984. It immediately flopped, but midnight showings saved it, and eventually became a cult classic. Toxie even became the studio’s mascot.

The reboot was announced last year with its star-studded cast. Fans have been waiting for a first glimpse. It’s here.

It doesn’t show too much (not a bad thing), but the first trailer makes it very clear this is a Troma movie, and it’s proud of it. Reviews from its debut at Fantastic Fest have said that it keeps all of the fun and over-the-top grossness from the studio’s classic movies but none of the outdated humor.

The Toxic Avenger Details

Peter Dinklage is the new Toxic Avenger, Winston Gooze. Elijah Wood plays the main villain, mogul Fritz Garbinger. Kevin Bacon plays his brother Bob Garbinger. Other cast members include Jacob Tremblay, Jane Levy, and Jonny Coyne.

Legendary Entertainment has partnered with original creators Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz of Troma Entertainment. It has earned an R rating from the MPA for “strong violence and gore, language throughout, sexual references, and brief graphic nudity.”

“…a stereotypical weakling who works as a janitor at Garb-X health club and is diagnosed with a terminal illness that can only be cured by an expensive treatment that his greedy, power-hungry employer refuses to pay for. After deciding to take matters into his own hands and rob his company, Winston falls into a pit of toxic waste and is transformed into a deformed monster that sets out to do good and get back at all the people who have wronged him.”

The movie premiered at Fantastic Fest last month. A wide release date or method hasn’t been announced.
