Let’s take a look at how you can field “Movie Marines” in 10th Edition Warhammer 40,000.

Movie Marines are by now a classic idea. They are in essence the answer to the questions “what if you could field Marines that lived up to their fluff?” Over the years people have tried various ways of fielding them. A couple of years ago I even looked at the concept and wrote up some lists using legal 8th Editions rules. I also covered them in 9th Edition. However its been a while since them and Space Marines have had a couple new codexes full of rules. So today let’s take a look at fielding them in 10th Edition.

What Are Movie Marines?

Movie Marines is a term created for Marines that act more like they do in the fluff or like action heroes from a movie. Way back when, in I think the 300th issue of White Dwarf, Games Workshop actually published some just-for-fun rules for this list. Over time others have toyed with updating these rules. The basic idea is to take a 10 man Marine squad and make it an army on its own, powerful enough to fight a whole 2000 pt army. Just like in the fluff.

These guys had souped-up weapons, crazy stats, and a pile of special rules. Each one was a killing machine. Together the squad was supposed to kick butt, spout one-liners and generally fight the war on their own. It’s a great idea and one that has captivated players for years.

How To Field them In 10th

My favorite way to play Movie Marines revolves around taking 10 Captains and making them total badasses. However, that wasn’t possible in 9th, which had much more restrictive options for taking both Captains and HQs in general. However 10th has swung back in the other direction and the all Captain army is back on the table. Let’s take a look at what we can do.

The List

For this basic list I’ve gone with classic Ultramarines, you’ll see why.

-Roboute Guilliman- 360 pts

Repulsor- 190 pts

The Base

Hammerfall Bunker- 175 pts

The Dreadnought

Knight Castellan- 565 pts

The list clocks in at a straight 2000 pts using the Munitorum v 1.4 Space Marine update points.

So the idea here is this is entirely fielded as a “counts-as” army. You take the 10 characters as our Movie Marine “squad”. Guilliman represents the badass veteran sergeant, while the other the other nine characters are the squad. Their upgraded “Rhino/Razorback” is the Repulsor that a bunch of them can pile into. Guilliman of course can’t – which could leave him vulnerable to getting shot off the table. That is where the Techmarine comes in. As long as Guilliman is near a friendly Marine he gets Lone Operative making it much harder to shoot him. The Techmarine in turn gets Lone Operative by being near a vehicle so they can kind of help each out.

Of course this list has more than 10 Marines in it, it also has a knight. I mean what better way to represent a Movie Marine Dreadnought? Captain are a lot cheaper now in 10th so I could fit one in to act as the big classic Marine stomp-y robot. And any good team in a movie needs a base, so we’ve given them a Hammerfall Bunker. OK, it’s maybe more G.I. Joe than movies, but who cares! Thanks to 10ths flexible points you can give your guys the loadout you want, either making them more uniform grunts or specializing each – Dirty Dozen style.

I’m pulling these guys to represent my Movie Marines on the tabletop!

Most of the New Space Marine Codex detachments rules would work for them as well. I think the  Ironstrom Spearhead would likely be my choice. With all your units being one model you’ll get a lot of re-rolls. Whatever you pick, I don’t think this army will ever be “good” but I do think it could be a LOT of fun.

Let us know how you would field Movie Marines in 10th, down in the comments!
