Warhammer: ‘Stormbringer’ Subscription Coming Soon To US

There’s some great news for any AoS fans based in the United States. Games Workshop is bringing Stormbringer subscription plan to our shores. What is this new, fancy service? Well, it’s not that new — GW has had this option in the UK previously and has also rolled out other versions for 40k in the past. Now, AoS is getting the same treatment.
“Stormbringer launches in the US today (Wednesday the 25th of October), and it’s absolutely rammed with Warhammer goodness. You get miniatures in most issues, and there are also tools, paints, scenery, and other cool swag available. It’s only available in the US via subscription, which means you’ll have a weekly guide to the Mortal Realms delivered directly to your door.”
The Stormbringer Arrives
Okay, so let’s back-up a bit and break this down. This is a weekly subscription from Games Workshop. Each week, you’ll get a package that contains something to add to your collection. Most of the time it’s miniatures but there’s also tools, paints, scenery and “other swag” as mentioned above. It comes in these neat little packages:
If you stay subscribed for the entire run you’ll end up with a fairly massive collection of Age of Sigmar miniatures. You’ll have more than enough miniatures to build two full armies when you’re done.
There are 80 weekly issues in the collection. It’s worth noting the how the pricing works:
The Premium subscription is another $3 per issue but periodically you’ll get a “centerpiece” model like Krondys, Gordrakk, or a Dankhold Troggoth.
This isn’t just a model subscription either. There’s also hobby guides and even “how to play” parts — it’s good for beginners looking to slowly get into AoS or veterans looking to expand their collections.
Run The Numbers
Is this sub for you? Honestly, it’s not a bad idea — but you really need to run the numbers to decide if this is something you’ll want to pursue. I like the idea of getting package every week. That should be plenty of time to build (and possibly paint) whatever minis that arrive before the next batch. But I like to know the total costs of things. So I’ve run the numbers:
- Week 1 – $6.99
- Week 2 – Free
- Week 3 and beyond – $13.99
- Shipping and Handling – $2.50 per week
- Plus tax where applicable
There’s 80 packages for everything. So let’s just skip tax for now to keep it as simple as possible. That’s going to come out to roughly $1,298.21 before taxes. That’s $1098.21 in stuff and $200 in shipping and handling. Now, that price doesn’t hit you all at once as that’s 80 weeks worth of stuff. These payments are broken up over a year and seven months (roughly).
Now, you CAN cancel your subscription so you could get the first couple weeks (or months) and stop. And it IS a lot of stuff in general along with “free gifts” along the way. I was looking for a complete list of all the things you’ll get after the full subscription on their website. But after a few scrolls up and down the page, I couldn’t find a list. That means it’s not easy to tell if this would be a good deal overall or not.
Personally, I’m going to sit this one out. I don’t need these models as I don’t need more Stormcast Eternals or Kruleboyz models. However, I do like the idea of a slow-grow collection/subscription like this and think the concept certainly has some merit. But the Stormbringer collection isn’t my personal cup of tea and that’s okay.
