Necromunda: Now Games Workshop Is Just Showing Off – Even More Terrain Tricks
Games Workshop’s Design Studio created versatile Necromunda Terrain kits. And they’re showing off even more cool tips to prove it!
I’m getting over some of the super cool design elements that went into the various Necromunda/Zone Mortalis terrain GW showed off last time. Well now they are back with a second round of even more terrain tips and tricks utilizing these kits. Prepare to get your mind blown.
Ladders And Rails
“These ladders are modular, to allow for alternate strut heights. They’re separated into a top section, plus short and long middle sections that allow any combination. They also can hang freely on the bars of the platforms, allowing you to combine them with whatever terrain configuration you have gone with.”
First up, we have a closer look at the ladders included in the Thanos Pattern kit. If you built these you might remember the various sections. Well, good news about these ladders: they are designed to work with just about any terrain configuration you can think of. Because of the sections can link-up you can extend these to just about any length you want. Furthermore, the curved piece at the end (top OR bottom) can be combined with the various bars of the platforms to give your gangers lots of ways to get around.
That’s not really a huge reveal here — but did you know you could also attach them INSIDE the habs for easy roof access?
The ladders can also be secured to terrain without glue if you put the ladder attach section (piece D40) on both ends. This is great if you want to keep things modular:
But enough about ladders, let’s talk about those rails for a moment. The aren’t just there for looks. As you’ve already seen above, they are very functional as they allow you to clip in all those ladders — but it’s not just ladders that fit. There’s the classic curved railing that slots in:
But did you know you could use the rails to help stabilize walkways from the Sector Mechanicus set? Or that the habs can be built at the same height (from the curved bar) as Zone Mortalis columns which you can then use a walkway to connect them?
Yeah — this is really smart design. But what if you’re habs are slightly off? Good thing you can also have angled walkways courtesy of the rails and the right platforms:
And then you can use those angled walk ways to connect to even more cool walkways from the other kits:
“The walkways fit the same gap as Sector Mechanicus floors. Use C15 (not C16) to attach the two together – this allows for several walkways to join two Habs or platforms.”
This isn’t even an exhaustive list of things you can do either. We haven’t even scratch Hatches yet. But if you want to get the full rundown go check out the full article because it’s full of really cool tips!
Best Terrain Sets Ever?
Once again, I want to say thank you to the GW design team and specifically to “Design Studio terrain master Owen” for creating these sets. It’s clear that a lot of cool ideas and thought went into making these sets. I appreciate that all three of these terrain sets (Sector Mechanicus, Zone Mortalis, and the Ash Wastes sets) we designed to work with each other.
I don’t know if this was all planned out from day one or things “just happened to line-up.” Either way, I think this is a huge win for Necromunda fans and hobbyists looking to create an awesome looking and highly modular board. Once again, we here at BoLS salute you for your work and thank you for showcasing these tips. I can’t wait to see the next set of terrain GW comes up with and I hope that set ALSO works with these previous sets. Let the creativity flow!
Seriously — go play with the possibilities and just experiment with these kits. It’s a ton of fun!
