Sabrina Morningstar Cosplayer Interview with Ayla Craft
What was your first cosplay? Where did you wear it, and how did you choose that character?
My first cosplay was as the cover character, Troubled Girrl, for “Squee!” my friend’s documentary project about women in fandom. I was going to my first DragonCon and wanted to try cosplay, and this seemed like a good way to support my friend and try something new.
Which other cosplayers inspire you?
I know it’s cliche, but every cosplayer inspires me. Seeing people be excited and having fun is why I do this.
What is your strongest construction skill?
I have a lot of experience with sewing. I started by making costumes for my family when we would work at Renaissance Faires when I was 12. From there, I made my own Halloween costumes for the local community theater.
What construction materials still give you a hard time?
I don’t really work with 3D prints or laser cutters. My husband does any foam builds I need, but I’m still learning about the ever-expanding field of fabric arts. And I really want to get more experience working with make-up, esp more SFX makeup.
Does your culture, identity, or personality inspire your cosplay? If so, how?
I’ve really found a lot of freedom in cosplaying aspects of characters that are very different from my own. I crossplay a fair amount. I identify as female, but sometimes it is liberating to move through space as something very different from yourself. That includes Gonzo the Great, aliens, and, of course, my favorite, Jack Skellington. It’s not really about gender. If anything, it’s about bold characters, and gender is an afterthought.
Do you have any favorite memories from your time spent cosplaying?
I’m very new to this level of cosplay competition. Honestly, winning the Friday Night Cosplay Competition at DragonCon was mind-blowing!! But one interaction has stuck with me for years. When I was doing Gonzo from Muppet’s Christmas Carol, one of the hotel staff paused while cleaning to run over and tell me, ”You were my childhood.” Getting that reaction from someone not attending the con made me feel so connected and validated.
What’s the funniest/most disastrous cosplay malfunction you’ve ever experienced/survived?
I’ll give you two. My first cosplay, Troubled Girrl, was made out of latex. A material I was using a lot at the time. We decided to go to the parade that morning at DragonCon, which is outside, in Atlanta, in August, and well, latex and sweat are not friends. Let’s just say it was disastrous. The other was the White Rabbit from Alice and Wonderland. We made a huge pocket watch that was also a flask!
What is the biggest cosplay on your Bucket List?
Top of my bucket list for a while was Statler and Waldorf from the Muppet Show, and this competition win has given me the confidence to try it for DragonCon 2024 with my husband.
