Starsiege Tribes is a game about going fast and shooting exploding frisbees at your friends. And it’s back with a sixth game.

Starsiege Tribes is a first-person shooter franchise built on speed. At one time, it had a reputation for being “the world’s fastest shooter”. And while that may not be true any longer, you can still feel its imprint in games like Titanfall 2, where Pilots skate off walls, and every one is somehow better than you.

Well, now, a sixth entry in the Tribes franchise has surfaced, eight years after the last one, Tribes: Ascend, got its last update. The newest game, which seems to be called Tribes 3: Rivals, is the work of Prophecy Games, a former subsidiary of Hi-Rez, the studio responsible for Tribes: Ascend.

Starsiege Tribes – New Gameplay Footage, Fire Up Those Spinfusors

Earlier, the game appeared on SteamDB with the title Tribes 3: Rivals. And since then, new compilations of alpha gameplay have appeared, alongside the news of an expected playtest coming Wednesday or Thursday of this week.

According to reporting by FPS-Z, who spoke to an anonymous developer at Prophecy Games, some of the team from Tribes: Ascend are involved in the creation of the new game:

“A lot of the core team from TA is still involved in the development for this new TRIBES game, especially on the maps and physics side. I don’t know an exact percentage but the studio is extremely excited about this one, we have a lot of the OG folks who were involved from before.”

Players interested in signing up for the playtest or learning more about the game as it is in development can find out more by joining the new Tribes Discord, which is now publicly available. There, developers and early testers are showing off more about the game, including new screenshots and updates.

Prophecy Games’ other big project is Starsiege: Deadzone, a “corridor extraction shooter” featuring difficult combat, that, while narratively connected to the Tribes universe, is a different beast altogether.

Hopefully we see more about this, after the playtest starts this week!
